Whoever Said Cats are Nocturnal Hasn't Met My Cats
Cats are said to be nocturnal, but mine sleep more at night than they do in the daytime. That says a lot!

They don't sleep through the night the way people do, because they get up and fart around for short intervals. I know this because I work nights at home. It's very peaceful at 4 a.m when cats are dozing in the room with me. But as for being nocturnal, that's certainly not the case. I wouldn't call them diurnal either, because they're not exactly active in the daytime either. They're just cats.

1. Cats aren't either
They sleep, by my estimation, about 23 1/2 hours per day and spend the rest of their time asking to go out, asking to eat, asking for water and tripping me.

2. Mine is much the same...
except she also spends her time trying to do things she's not supposed to, and therefore irritating the crap out of me. (I swear she must think her name is 'Bouda, no!')

She also attacks ankles, but that's kinda cute.

3. My Leon goes to bed at 9 pm. You can set your watch by him.
He takes a little time to adjust after the clock changes, but within a week or two, he all but walks into the living room at 9pm, says "I'm going to bed", and heads upstairs. He's more diurnal than I am.

4. mine sleep like logs all night
Usually one between me and the edge of the bed and one smack in the middle of the bed. Sometimes I can nudge them to make more room, the one that slees in the middle anyway. I don't have the heart to shove Mini off the bed while she is asleep. The other two I am not sure about.

5. Cats who have to work for a living by hunting tend to be nocturnal.
But house cats adjust their schedules to match their hoomins' schedules, more or less. Except that they sleep a lot more.

6. Actually...MY CATS follow our routine in our house...EXCEPT that at 4:00 a.m.
they seem to find all kinds of moths and creepy creatures that they need to prowl to attack in those wee early hours and the only good thing is that maybe they keep our pest control bills down with their "early morning marauding" and so that's good? Our cats are always most active after 4:00 a.m...the "PROWLING TIME!"

Just so you know...we have had cats for over 30 years...lived with them....OY!

7. Ours sleep when we sleep, and WHERE we sleep.
They wait for me to go to bed, too. If I'm out here, they'll be out here, but the minute I head to the bedroom, they are right behind me. I have to lay down and find a comfy position fast, because otherwise they'll have taken up the entire bottom half of the bed!

9. I have one that heads to the bathroom when I go to brush my teeth and wash
my face, before I finish that he heads for the bed and is waiting for me. If I take too long to get there he yells at me.

10. Heh. Mine will occasionally yell at me if they *want* me to go to bed
because THEY'RE tired, lol.

One of mine also gets extremely upset whenever I soak in the bathtub. She'll come up the the edge of the tub, put her paws on it, and cry right into my face. I think she's just worried that the Evil Wet Water Cat Solvent Stuff is going to dissolve me or eat me or something. She won't stop pacing and crying until I get out, lol.

13. Scolded by a Cat
If I take too long to get there he yells at me

My Otis can be a nag. If there's something he doesn't like, he meows crossly at me. If it isn't obvious to me what's bothering him, he continues to nag. Over time, I've gotten to know what bothers him. For instance, he likes to look out the window. If the blinds aren't raised he scolds me until I raise them. Now I keep them raised and make sure I'm dressed in front of the window.

12. cat companionship -- priceless!
It was a year ago last night that I was having some blood sugar issues in the night and not a clue what was wrong with me. My dear ginger tabby came to sit at my elbow while I tried to feel better, I was scared and dizzy. He sat inches away from my face until I finally decided to call paramedics.

That's priceless. I hope I care for him as well as he always has been a good companion.

He nearly died a few weeks ago with pleural effusion and congestive heart failure, and it was my turn to sit with him. The meds disoriented him and he couldn't walk. He's better now, and we're back to watching out for each other. Having that cat spooning with me at night is just the best thing ever.

14. They Know When You're Sick
My cats know when I'm not feeling well and they give me plenty of slack. I think it's very touching that they know things like that. I've heard stories of cats actually being supportive of their human companions. That's not in the book about cats. But if you've lived with a cat and been sick, you know.
