Pic thread for the DU *2D/3D digital artists*. Show your works! (Dial-up warning)
I recently ventured back to sci-fi renderings, so here are a few:

The Outer Rim

Black Hole

When the dream ends

All what remains

 Funny thing is that this is the one most unlikely to be happening. There's no decomposing in space, but likely mummification, and also the ships metal wouldn't corrode at all. These bodies would just be pulled into the planets gravity and being torn apart from particles flying around, but ... there's still no seat belts on board the Enterprise! :D

15. Thx!
Bryce for the initial render, yes...

Of course, even with volumetric rendering turned on to ensure the process goes from 10 minutes to 5 days, end results still look hokey, which is why I diddle around with post-processing.

16. LOL @ the rendering times.
Been there, done that. My record for longest render is 6 days 13 hours+. It was shortly after that that I upgraded the ole PC. I don't use the volumetric rendering anymore anyways now. The results aren't really worth it most of the time, and I can usually get close to the desired effect in Corel or Photoshop afterwards.

17. Volumetric lights are killers.
I'm using C4D with Vray now, and it has a transparency issue. If something has an Alpha map, render times go up like crazy.

But yes, for volumetric lighting like fog, I think you're way better off to use postwork.

Have you ever looked into Vue? There's Vue 7 out now and it looks pretty promising. I'm getting it since it interacts with C4D, and I miss being able to make terrains.

Looks like excellent software, but the price is rather a lot at this juncture. :) Maybe by February...

And even with my system (8GB, Quad core processor at 4.07GHz) it took up to 4 days; canceled after 2.6 as the new HD came in and wanted to get the old one back before the return period expired. And you're right; post production did do what I needed, and experimenting with effects got far more than what I bargained for... :D

When I see art for the first time, my brain usually tries to imagine where the light comes from. I'm not sure how "the sun" works in space, so as I find myself trying to figure it out my head EXplodES :D

24. As I said upthread, she's the one making art.
I just put stuff together and hit a key, then look how it turned out. ;)

I've stayed with one sun on these here. Which is, technically speaking, just a big lightbulb in space. But since there's no atmosphere in space, and therefore no filtering of sunlight, the light goes from outwashed overexposure to black shadows with no transition.

Wouldn't work well in sci-fi ...

21. A mix of digital, and hand drawn stuff mixed with digital.

Just a simple Bryce effort, some touch up in Corel. I see a glaring error in this pic, but so far no one else has. :)

And the obligatory Godzilla pic.

------------

Your stuff is mind bendingly awesome. I totally love those pics, and the retro feel (whether by design or accident) is phenomenal. Reminds me of Chriss Foss, who did a lot of sci-fi stuff in the 70's.

28. Great stuff, and I still love the Godzilla,
and thanks again for pointing me to the site where I could get these models.

I was trying to see what you're been talking about the Bryce work: Is it the fact that the shadows in the water are different than the ones on the groud, coming from different light sources?

35. Well, there's that, but I used three light sources on purpose.
I wanted to deliberately do a very bright, colorful picture because it's the total opposite of what I normally do. Just to show myself that not every pic has be dark and evil. :)

If you look in the water on the right side of the river (just left and down from the rocks on the far shore), you can see the bottom of the terrain wireframe I used for the ground on the near shore. Just a slight greenish color. At first it looks like a reflection of the far shore, but there's a perfect 90 degree angle in the water just under the surface (and we all know how often perfectly straight lines occur in nature). And from the angle of the person's view it shouldn't even be there at all. I didn't even notice until days after I was done, and like a yobbo I rarely save these things in Bryce format so I can go back and rework something. I could fix it with a clone brush or something now, but fuck it. I'm done with that pic, for good or ill. :)

Glad the model site came in handy. I did three pretty cool pics with Star Wars models that I found online but then I accidentally deleted them off of my zip drive before backing them up. x(

And I looked really hard. That's no error at all. :)

There's a great site I've known for years but just recently got the models from it:
http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/fictional.php

Browse through it, the Babylon 5 models are neat.

And I can't count the renders I've started but trashed after it, and it was no accident at all. Sorry to hear you've lost some good ones.

Either way these are impressive to me. Exciting textures, detail and composition.

What software are you using? I used Carrara Pro 5 for texturing and rendering with AutoCad and Amapi for modeling. I stopped spending much time rendering about 4 years ago when my son was born because it took so much time but it was a really fulfilling hobby of mine for a few years.

Here are a few I kept. Not as good as yours by any stretch but I like them...

Love the second one, but all of them are great.

I'm using Cinema 4D with Vray now, before it was 3ds Max.

I don't really do modeling anymore, although I did once a loudspeaker in Hexagon (rendered with Carrara 6: )

Although I'm really tempted to start with it again, since I always change some things around anyway; why not making my own stuff? It just takes, as you say, a lot of time, so that's the drawback.

Thanks for sharing your work! :hi:
