"Why Does New York State Want To Break It's Indian Treaties?"

Have any other New Yorkers seen or heard these commercials? They're played on the radio and on tv constantly.

But you never see an actual Indian in them, or get even the slightest idea of what treaty the state of New York is breaking.

Does anyone know?

1. From the Seneca Nation website...

The U.S. Constitution calls treaties “the Supreme Law of the Land.” And yet New York State is about to violate U.S.
treaties that have lasted over 200 years. The state plans to implement regulations that would impose sales tax on
petroleum and tobacco products sold on Indian lands. These regulations would violate sacred treaties between the
U.S. and Indian tribes.

Since 1794 the U.S. has acknowledged Indian independence, and the Treaty of 1842 clearly says the Seneca Nation
will not be taxed by any US government. Including New York State. The state’s unconstitutional action will cause over
1000 Indians and non-Indians to lose their jobs, consumer prices to rise, and businesses to close.

We urge you to explore this topic and learn more about this issue. Tell Governor Pataki how you feel. Urge the
Governor to honor the supreme law of the land. Because if you break a treaty, you break the law

6. I don't know about "sacred," but

"the Treaty of 1842 clearly says the Seneca Nation will not be taxed by any US government" -- that's pretty damned clear.

4. I hear it on K-ROCK and other stations

And there's one commercial with some teacher saying how she teaches her students that the United States stands up for freedom and jusice, ect - and how with the State breaking it's treaties she doesn't know what to tell her students.

It's a dumb, cheezy commercial.

7. Treaty Schmeaty

Why should we have to live up to treaties that were written in 1842. This is 2004. Those injuns need to come into the 21st century. We won, they need to get over it. </sarcasm>
