If you find yourself constantly telling people they are PC
You might be a racist.

Man, I hate that crap. And I am not necessarily very politically correct in that I say offensive shit sometimes and have a pretty dark sense of humor.

Sorry - just venting. I was arguing with someone I don't really like on a local scooter forum about the whole birth certificate thing, and when I pointed out the racism inherent in these attacks on Obama, he called me PC, then proceeded to over-explain how he's not racist, including the "some of my best friends are black" type of crap. He then said that whenever the left can't handle "the truth" then we accuse the right of racism.

No, asshole: I am accusing you of using racist tactics because that's what they are. Well, that mixed with a bit too much of your believing in bullshit rightwing "news" sites. He's the kind of guy who will rant about someone posting something from factcheck.org (TEH BIAS!!!1!) but then post articles from worldnutdaily insinuating something sinister about Obama's visit to his grandma!

It helps that the guy is an asshole in real life too, so I am not really feeling bad about completely owning him in the argument.

Another hilarious aside: he claims to have secret service clearance "all the way to the President" and to have in some unnamed and vague way, worked for two administrations (Reagan and Bush I). Ha! Bullshit, dude. I've got $50 that says he's in the 82 Chairborne Fighting Freepers, and that's about it. It cracks me up how many of these clowns claim to be some sort of secret agent killing machine. Ok, Colonel Flagg. Whatever you say.

1. Hahaha, idiocy on the internet is amplified by the anonymity it offers.
What a jerkoff.

2. If he's on a scooter forum, he's probably not all THAT anonymous
Just because we scooterists are never too far separated from each other.

That being said, just because someone rides a Vespa doesn't mean they can't be a fucking idiot :)

4. Make that "perceived anonymity".
He probably thinks he's more anonymous than he is.

3. it happens on here too
I see so much inherent racism on DU, especially when it comes to discussions of Latin America and immigration. Oh, but if I point it out that a poster is a racist, my post gets deleted. Such shit.

5. No shortage of racist fucks around.
And most of them don't realize that just because they're not advocating slavery doesn't mean they're not being racist.

6. Point out to him
That what the Right Wing denounces as "PC" is just what my mother taught me as good manners. Call people what they want to be called, and don't trash talk behind their backs.

7. There might have been some arguments to the anti-PC thing at one point
But seriously, the argument has pretty much been co-opted by people who want to act like assholes, then claim social persecution when they get called on it. That really annoys me; if you want to have loathsome opinions and act like an asshole, then own that and stick by your principles when confronted. Playing the anti-PC card just seems like passive-aggressive behavior, like a schoolyard bully who'll get the first punch in and claim, "I was just fooling around," but will run to the teacher if someone "fools around" on him in kind.

10. Yeah, the term was actually coined in lefty academia,
as a bit of gentle self-mockery about the convoluted language sometimes produced by itself.

But most people that use the term these days not only use it as cover for their rude asshattery, but actually present themselves as brave iconoclastic rebels, challenging social conventions.

11. The term "politically correct" has lost its meaning and has become another rightwing talking
Edited on Sun Dec-07-08 07:09 PM by Pushed To The Left
point. PC used to mean walking on eggshells and trying not to offend anybody. Now it means pretty much anything left of center! For example, under the old definition, Bill Maher had a show called "Politically Incorrect". These days, the right wing would probably label him PC for opposing their policies.

In a way, the whole anti-PC talking point is a form of PC for prejudiced and/or overly judgmental people. It's a way for them to try to squash dissent. They will make their extreme and/or hateful statements, and if anybody dares to disagree or call them on it, they will throw the dreaded "politically correct" label at them. They want to be able to judge others as much as they want, but want the rest of us to walk on eggshells to not judge them! That's what the new meaning of "PC" is all about. It's hypocrisy.

What I'd like to see is a more fitting term to describe the "anti-PC" crowd.......

12. Political correctness is a straw man that asshole reactionaries attack in lieu of reasonable refutes
At least that's my opinion of it in a nutshell.

14. I know plenty of racist people who have black friends.
The argument is ALWAYS white people have their rednecks, black people have their n*****s. It makes me livid. These are all people who are "God fearing" people. I always say would you call a black person that in front of Jesus. That always shames them, but not enough apparently. I am happy to say that most of these people are older. I say that because I really feel like my generation and those younger aren't as likely to have that racism. It is obviously taught. And although we as a nation have progressed slowly, we have still progressed. I really hope for the sake of my daughter (12 weeks old), that by the time she is my age, racism will be a thing of the past. That is probably wishful thinking, but I really do think it will be much better. That is my hope anyway.

All I can do for my baby is teach her love for everyone. No matter what. And that is what I will do. I hope all others are doing the same.
