The latest generation: Millennials grow into politics
The latest generation
By VICTOR GRETO
Staff reporter
03/01/2004

They grew up surrounded by affluence, laptops, cell phones, Bill Clinton and the notion of volunteerism.

And they came of age when commercial airliners became weapons.

Some scholars, including University of Delaware graduate student Scott Beale, call them Millennials, a generation of more than 70 million Americans born between the late 1970s and late 1990s. More than 300,000 of them live in Delaware.

Beale, 28, who counts himself among the Millennials, recently published a book, "Millennial Manifesto," that tasks his generation to become more active both socially and politically. He and other scholars said the generation has been recognized more for its social activism than its political interest.

But that may be changing, they said. Examples they pointed to include former Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean's success in sparking young voters' interest.

1. I wish they could make up their minds
About who is a Baby Boomer, who is Gen X'er, and who is a Gen Y'er/Millenial.

Everyone seems to have a different idea.

2. BS
If you're 28 you're an Xer, NOT a Millie.

by most accounts, millies start in the early 80's NOT the late 70's.

And we're just starting to come into view, so who knows what we'll do.

I dont see how some people who remember Reagan getting shot (I dont, born in '82) and remember the challenger (again, not me) could be in the same gen as those who do.

6. I'm with you
I always thought the Gen Y/Millenials started in 1979 - 1980.

28 is definitely too old to be a millenial, as Generation X by most accounts is considered 1965 - 1978.

10. Don't try to call my older son (born in 1978) a Gen X-er
The younger one, born in 1982, has no doubts that he's whatever comes after Gen X.

But the older one, though he's aware he was born on the cusp, doesn't identify with Gen X at all. He sees them as those whiney, slacker, early 90's grunge rock types who were so annoying about the time he was in junior high.

He feels that his generation is marked by having grown up with computers and video games. And even though he realizes he only got access to those things when he was 7 or 8, and therefore isn't as fully acculturated as his younger brother's age cohort, he knows that's where his worldview comes from.

5. Interesting article... strange name...
That's an interesting article... I'm just not so sure about calling myself a Millennial... Makes me think of Waco or Jim Jones and his Kool-Aid...

-Mike, aged 20 and avowed Millennial

9. well we need the younger folks to do something
some of us boomers are getting tired! :)... I am so glad that whatever generation it is called is politically aware and active, rather than thinking that "politics and voting are for old people." Whatever ya'll are called you ( well I guess we) need to get all those millions to vote Democratic!
