3. You could make this less confusing, and edit to say "driver side" or "passenger side"
Mine's on the driver's side.

Why they stopped doing that, I'll never understand.

12. I wonder if that was for safety
Maybe not be a good thing to locate the fuel tank inlet within a crumple zone.

15. Neither do old Buicks
I was once rear-ended by a Trans Am. The Pontiac was totaled. I had to replace my bumper and impact absorbers. No sheet metal damage at all.

17. Everything will be OK
I'm sure the untold numbers of Japanese DU members who post in the Lounge are a forgiving lot and will perhaps take this opportunity to inform Toyota that it is indeed better to put the gas intake on the left side rather than the right, or vice versa...

Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 09:32 PM by LeftyMom
Still, that's cheaper than gas was when I bought the car, so I can't complain. I feel like I should indulge in long road trips before it goes up again.

It would be running even better if I wasn't stuck having to go 55 in CA. I never imagined that I would miss the east coast. But I am so ready to go back there. I am never coming this far west again.

31. My car is on the right (Ford Focus). Wifes' van (Town & Country) is on the left.
Besides, the Cartalk guys had a way of telling which side your fuel cap is on by looking just at the back of your vehicle. In most cases, your fuel filler is on the opposite side of your exhaust pipe.

Unless you drive an old Beetle - some of those are filled up underneath the front "hood" (I guess, but if the engine is in the back isn't the back the hood and the front the trunk?)

It is supposed to be safer to fill from a can on the side of the road than on the diver's side.

37. true
Unfortunately what I sometimes find is there is no place to wait for a pump if it is busy because everyone else is approaching the pump on the left of the car while I am going the other direction to approach on the right of it. My 1978 Nova had the fill cap behind the number plate in the center.

34. I have one of those rotating gas tanks.
If I pull up to a pump on the driver's side, the fuel cap's on the passenger's side. If I pull up to a pump on the passenger's side, the fuel cap's on the driver's side.

44. could not vote - have 2 cars, one has cap on right, one on left.
I usually pull up to the wrong side, say bad things, drive around to other pump, vowing to remember which car is which.
Has not worked yet.

45. The dashboard indicator can often give a clue
I use this as I often drive rentals. If one looks closely at the indicator, the pump handle icon is almost always on the same side as the fill tube:
