Tuesday during a traffic stop but is expected to survive.
A sheriff’s dispatcher tells KATO radio that Hughes was hit in the abdomen by a
blast from a .410-guage shotgun but was wearing his bulletproof vest. He’s being treated at
Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center in Safford.
Hughes had pulled over a vehicle near a recreation area north of Thatcher at about 2:30 a.m.
Officials with the sheriff’s office didn’t immediately return calls from The Associated Press.
Suspects in the shooting are being sought. Cochise County sheriff’s spokeswoman
Carol Capas says law enforcement in nearby counties are on the lookout for a
dark blue Nissan sedan occupied by a man and a woman that was involved in the shooting.
