RFID Tags in New US Notes Explode When You Try to Microwave Them

Adapted from a letter sent to Henry Makow Ph.D.

Want to share an event with you, that we experienced this evening.. Dave had over $1000 dollars in his back pocket (in his wallet). New twenties were the lion share of the bills in his wallet. We walked into a truck stop/travel plaza and they have those new electronic monitors that are supposed to say if you are stealing something. But through every monitor, Dave set it off. He did not have anything to purchase in his hands or pockets. After numerous times of setting off these monitors, a person approached Dave with a 'wand' to swipe why he was setting off the monitors.

Believe it or not, it was his 'wallet'. (more at site)

1. Try it and find out
I would try it myself but the Bush* economy has left me with little cash to spare.

2. I sent the request into snopes.com to look it at
(yeah, me and probably a thousand others)

Nothing up yet.

In another thread, I mentioned it is possible that the "exploding" is the reult of high concentrations of magnetic ink or other anti-tamper devices woven into the bill that aren't RFID.

3. I doubt that is true...
But Snopes would be the only way to find out. Perhaps you should suggest that they investigate and see what they find.

5. A lot of times expensive leather items will set off those sensors...
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 05:39 PM by Richardo
...if the tags were not deactivated by the store where you bought the item. (You know, when they rub the item over the panel next to the cash register.)

We have people setting them off all the time at the bookstore - we just take their wallet or purse and wave it over the panel and the problem goes away.

Another myth busted: credit cards are not affected by this process.

6. That's gotta be a hoax
They even mention :tinfoilhat:

They don't make RFID sensors that small.

9. I have had similar experiences
Including having my wallet "swiped" to stop the problem. The thing is, though, that I don't carry cash in my wallet. (It also isn't *close* to being a new or expensive wallet. :) ) Beats me as to what the cause might be.

11. tried nuking my bills....
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 06:39 PM by WoodrowFan
The article noted (with pictures) that they put a stack of new 20s into their microwave and turned it on. When they did, the same spot burned on most of the bills Over Jackspn's right eye). (They have pics). I tried it. I took a new 20, put it into my microwave and pressed "1" (for 1 minute.). What happened. nothing, nada, zilch. Not even warm. Sounds like a problem with their microwave to me, but feel free to test it yourself.

Update: Tried two bills for 2 minutes. Nothing. Good. I don't have 20s to waste!! LOL. And yes, they are new bills, brand spanking new, crisp, series 2004...
