I'm not expecting total quiet or anything. Normal living noises are fine and expected at any hour. Even noisy stuff at most hours is fine--we go to bed around midnight anyway, and the child, if she's here, can (usually) sleep through all but the rowdiest stuff.
Parties are fine, too, but I don't think many people expect them to break out in the middle of the night in the middle of the week. It's been *every* day this week so far (a week I started with a 102 degree fever, 80 pages of writing, and two exams to prepare for, so perhaps I'm crankier than usual). (We're in the lower, so if we have a party--which we usually don't because the child's here on weekends and we work/go to school during the week--they won't hear us as much as we hear them.)
When we moved in here, we had a teacher and a sushi chef living above us. They were almost never home, and when they were home, we only occasionally heard the TV, the vacuum, some people over for dinner.
Then, they moved out, and a "single nurse" moved in...her boyfriend soon followed and they're *loud*. Nice people, not at all pissy and quite apologetic if we ask them to quiet down (especially if they look at the clock and realize it's the middle of the night), but if they've been drinking it just starts up again in a few minutes.
Sigh...in the spring, I graduate, and have a job lined up, so we'll be able to move then.
