Fed the squirrels today at Riverside Park - photos (about 300K worth)
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 06:26 PM by Rabrrrrrr
had a great time feeding squirrels on the wall between the upper and middle levels. This squirrel became my buddy. After the peanuts ran out, he came right up, and I thought for sure he was gonna jump on me. Thankfully, he did not. Little buckaroo got a good feeding today, though - he vehemtly chased other squirrels away from the pile of peanuts I put up for him. :-)

I love squirrels. And not just to eat. They're just fun.

He moved fast sometimes!

So I started anticipating shots, and hitting the shutter before I would with a non-digital camera. still trying to get used to delay between pressing the button and when the camera actually takes a shot.

And some bonus more-artistic pics from the secondary wall, between the lowest level and the middle level.

I love Riverside Park.

1. Where is your Riverside Park?
We used to feed peanuts to our resident chipmunks and squirrels. They would gently take them from our hands and soon we had over a dozen chippys and two dozen squirrels begging for handouts. The assembly drew a family of hawks and we were heartbroken that they were getting picked off. We reluctantly quit feeding them but they were some of the best part-time pets I ever had.

3. The true one! The one in NYC
A little NYC arrogance there, yes, I know. :-)

I didn't think about the fact that just about every city that has a river has a Riverside Park. My hometown did. :-) Sorry for the confusion.

So you fed the chipmunks, and from that, you fed the hawks as well. Nice for you! Gotta keep the circle of life going.

I also saw a woodpecker and a BEAUTIFULLY blue BlueJay.

And a dead bat.

2. Cool pictures!
When I worked at the zoo we cut down a tree and it had one baby squirrel in it. I took it home and nursed it with a tiny bottle and raised it until we let it go outside the keepers building. He hung around for a while and we would feed him but one day he found a female and we never saw him again. They are cool. Love your pictures.

5. Since I was standing so close, that's how came in to get the peanuts.
Sort of a squirrel stealth mode when they flatten out like that. He'd do that with pretty much every peanut, but yet, when they were gone, he boldly appracohed me even closer and stared at me, like, 'Well, shithead? Can't you see I'm out?' so I'd put more peanuts out, he'd do the same slinky stealth mode, then boldy move up to me again when the peanuts were gone.

So apparently a squirrel only needs stealth when *getting* the peanuts.

NYC squirrels are weird, since they are pretty used to people, but retain some wild qualities, but each squirrel has them each in different proportions.
