Then with some other groups it's obvious: For example, Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls." It's obvious they are Brits.

It's not necessarily a conscious thing, just the fact that rock music is largely an American invention.

On the other hand, it is often possible to hear the difference if you listen closely. For instance, a side-by-side comparison between U2 and Big Country (who I like to think of as "the Scottish U2":P):
