Cancel The Academy Awards - the results are in.
I saw Wanted last night. I think I'm going to watch it again tonight.

Ironman? Yawn.

The Dark Knight? Oh wow, an evil villain is evil. And in the IRL's he commited suicide (yes, it's a suicide, even if unintentional).

The Hulk? Aside from the South American chick in the beginning, I was checking DU half way through.

Superhero movies are snorefests anymore. Wanted has it all: great story, classic themes (who is my father, girl meets boy, boy learns how to shoot gun), kick ass soundtrack (Elfman sings!), special effects, hot chicks with tats. What more could you ask for? Forget about it. Everything else this year sucked goat balls compared to this movie.

I just hope they don't lame it up with a sequel.

1. That movie sucked goat balls compared to the graphic novel. n/t

3. Did the graphic novel have a soundtrack?
That's really apples and oranges. Two completely different mediums. I could argue that the internet is a much longer saga than War and Peace.

15. The graphic novel was about a normal guy who becomes a supervillain.
They took the very heart of the plot -- that an average guy turns unremittingly evil when corrupted by power -- and completely turned it on its head. It's not just the change in form that bothers me -- I agree with you, trying to compare the two media is an apples and oranges comparison. What bothers me is that they took a really great plot from a book and completely destroyed it. And why? Because they didn't think audiences would cheer for the villain? C'mon! Who doesn't love Darth Vader? The producers of Wanted insulted the intelligence of American audiences -- as Hollywood so often does -- and that annoys the living shit out of me.

17. It's not fair to just say, well that's what Hollywood does
I agree with you, by and large. But in rare cases, the book (graphic novel, etc) and movie can stand on their own even when they are completely different by production end.

Look at Blade Runner. The book takes on an introspective tone where Deckard is trying to figure out what makes himself tick. The movie blows off this subplot completely and leads you to wonder if he's the same product as what he's hunting. Both stand as great stories.

Now I'm going to have to trackdown the graphic novel. More money to waste. Thanks!

24. No problem!
:)

And I certainly don't want to disparage film as a whole, or even films based on books. I agree they can often stand on their own, and the Bladerunner/Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? example is a good one.

As for the graphic novel, it's pretty good. I don't know if I'd run out and buy it new, but it's worth a read.

33. I cheer for the villain.
Hell, I got a wee bit misty-eyed at the end of the episode of Batman: Beyond when Mr. Freeze died.

2. I don't even know what movie you're talking about.
And of that list, I only saw Iron Man. I liked it though.

But if Elfman did the soundtrack, then I will be seeing it.

4. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with Ironman...Robert Downey Jr.
was made for that role ( actually, the guy is so talented he could pretty much do anything he wants to do IMHO ).

The Hulk was just dumb...I'll have to check out Wanted

6. Ironman was ok
Downey made the movie and I agree, he's a great actor. But still, Wanted makes Ironman look like child's play.

Teehee.

Seriously, she was great in the movie and I typically am not that big of a Jolie fan. But the part really sings to her strengths. Glad you liked it, too.

This movie isn't even the best one Angelina Jolie has done this year. That'd be "Changeling." I bet she wins the Oscar for that movie.

you must need stupid explosions and ridiculous plot lines to follow along. :P

The plot for Changeling is not complex, but the acting is phenomenal. It's the best movie I've seen this year.

26. Hollywood, suspend your disbelief and just have a good time.
JUST because the movie isn't true to a comic book or graphic novel, or line of dialogue written on toilet paper in a men's room in Cleveland, doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy it. JC on a stick, the way people around here smash the shit out of movies, we might as well make none.

It's not what YOU like, it's what the GENERAL PUBLIC likes, and if YOU like what THEY like big bonus. BTW domestically, Ironman and Batman did over a billion dollars. Top that.

Damn.

35. Pointless random violence sells. BFD.
I thought The Dark Knight was a total waste of film and effort. No plot. Just people threatening other people and killing them.

This movie also says: Women are disposable, too. Kill off the only woman in the cast (Ms. Gyllenhaal) and there goes half your audience that identified with her, because they were female too.

PUKE.

34. I cannot stand Angelina Jolie
It hasn't been all that long since Mother Charity was wearing a vial of Billy Bob's blood around her neck, and then stealing Jennifer Anniston's equally contemptible husband. But now she's all respectable. Trash is still trash.

Oh. And I don't think she's all that hot either. Snakes in the head has a way of offsetting physical attributes.
