Can this chicken story be true?

Someone told us a story about a friend of theirs that had chickens. They said they tied something that the chickens would eat to a string or wire and then let the chicken eat it. Apparently the digestive time in a chicken is pretty quick and the thing tied to the string came back out and the next chicken ate it but the string was still attached to the first chicken from its rear-end. Then this happened a few more times and a whole string of chickens were strung together. Now can this be true? And what would you tie to a string that would not digest?? I'm a city slicker and have no idea about these things...

My bet is that story started as a drunken "wouldn't it be funny if..." conversation that morphed into a "one time, my friend's neighbor got some chickens..." kind of thing. I doubt it ever really happened (but I know nothing about chickens)...
