Pet peeve about craigslist
Why do people who are giving out free stuff (and some of it is crap..er scrap) insist on saying for 'needy family' only.

Ok
1. Only needy people should get your cast-offs?
2. If they are truly needy, they may not have the transportation to come haul it away
3. How do you determine neediness?

I understand for some there is an intent, but the reality is the craiglister is looking for someone to haul away some stuff (often heavy, cumbersome, etc) for free, that if not hauled by away by craiglistee, the craiglister would have to pay to have it hauled or recycled.

If you really have stuff (gently used) that you want to give to a needy family, then call a local charity. Many times if you have a couple pieces of furniture, the charity will pick it up for free. If you only have one or two small items, ask your neighbors and gather up some stuff.

For reasons that I can't explain, seeing craigslist ads for 'free' used toys to a "needy" family really burns my butt.
Before anyone flames me, know that I grew up poor and often had to do without. I have no problem with used anything, its just it feels like an insult. You get used items and castoffs all the time when you are poor, gifts should be the one time stuff is new.

You know what I want to see.... free used toys to a non-needy family, in exchange for non-needy family giving their new toys to a needy family. See then everyone wins, wealthier families learn a lesson, and poorer families get to feel the joy of new stuff.

When I donate, I donate new items to homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and community programs. My gently used stuff I donate to goodwill, etc. I mean, if I want to make sure a specific group gets my donation, I get off my butt and deliver it. (ok granted, not everyone can do that, if you can't please ignore).

This is more directed to those holier-than-thou people who feel like they are doing the world a favor.... I know not many here at DU, but I just needed to get this off my chest.

2. You are not
I had a pretty heated argument with my husband about this type of thing. I had an old purse that was torn and worn and beat up and I asked him to throw it out. When I noticed that it was still here, I asked him about it and he said he was going to bring it to the thrift shop. I always donate gently used items but I've been poor too and it really sucks when people assume that because you're poor, you'll be happy with any old junk, no matter how crappy.

Those are often the people who look into the shopping cart of people using food stamps, tsking if there's a bag of chips or a candy bar in there. :eyes:

3. I'm beginning to dislike craigslist altogether.
People there are so inconsiderate. They put stuff just anywhere and everywhere, breaking all the board rules they possibly can...and intentionally. Trying to sell pets, guns, and knives, listing services in the sale forum. They laugh about it as they do it over and over again. I used to love to shop on there for decent items I could use or re-purpose, now the place is full of a bunch of asses.

4. My biggest peeve about CL
is that it's so hard to find another guy to jerk off with me in a tornado (no gay stuff though) and that I end up being a laughing stock on the internet at places such as DU.

It got so bad that I started looking for JO buddies to pretend to smash my son's trains while doing it.

I almost *answered* that craigslist ad, and it would have been so awkward when it turned out to be you!
