though I just reread it and it does come across that way. My apologies.

I'll see if I can dig out a short story or perhaps I might post part of the incomplete one I'm trying (and failing) to adapt for the screen. Frustratingly, I'm finally getting paid to write something and I want to write anything except what I'm getting paid for.

30. In theory...
I'm being paid to be a Production Assistant on a film set and they're allowing me to write this screenplay during down-times because they think it sounds like something they would like to buy the rights to and film. So I get to write at least part of it on their dime and then maybe sell it to them too. But saying I'm a paid writer sounds better.

But I agree...it beats the hell out of making coffee for Charbucks Coffee. The only downside is that every single coworker I have at the coffeeshop wants to know if I can get them cast even though they have no acting experience.

The promised short section of the unfinished short story I'm adapting. Know that the science in the first paragraph isn't accurate, it's filler while I find a way to make the truth sound as poetic. The rest of this story is not this sad. This is a narrated opening setting the stage for the larger story. I think it's novel, how often do you see a film these days which is narrated?

Petrichor can be defined as the smell of thunderstorms and heavy rain, a pleasant truth which hides a far more interesting reality; the actual source of petrichor aroma is bacteria poop driven from the dirt by the unrelenting pounding of heavy deluge upon bone-dry soil, only to be ionized by static charge dissipating, the equal-and-opposite reaction to lightning. For reasons not remotely explicable by science, petrichor occurs strongest in sun storms, those rare events when the rain falls from a cloudless sky producing rainbows on rainbows for as far as the eye can see. Nick and Libby Howardson died on a beautiful day, not in any way common for March in New England, while their son Olaf nearly drowned in a four inch deep ditch on the side of U.S. 44 where it snakes through the low mountains of northwestern Connecticut.

Nick had been up since 2am, driving home from a family weekend in Montreal, rushing to be back for a department meeting at 1pm. Libby had implored him to stop at three different diners for a coffee or a sugary treat in the last hour of their lives. Had he, he would have passed through the canyon 5 minutes later, minimally, he'd have been more aware of the falling rocks sooner or swerved faster. “Had he” isn't a game we're going to play though. “Had he” leads to “Was he”: Was he distracted by the beauty of the rainbows? the smell of the rain, did it remind him of a long ago memory? If it had been dreary instead, would they have lived? Maybe Yes No, because I'm an omnipotent narrator and I've killed them. 131 miles from home, just outside of the town of Simsbury, CT, at 9:41am, while Nick was half-dozing off behind the wheel; a squirrel ran along a rock ledge knocking loose some small rocks which cascading downslope soon gathered more and larger stones, before depositing themselves into the southbound lane of the scenic road directly in front of Nick Howardson's blue minivan which subsequently plowed into them doing nearly 41 mph, the brakes barely touched.

(Continued.)

72. I'm no longer an Nutmegger as of January...
I am either moving to NYC if I get this job (Production Asst. with some screen-writing thrown in.) that my best friend is taking his sweet time to formally-offer. I have an informal offer but I need things like salary or hourly-wage info. (I'm a member of the Freelancers Union so all my benefits (insurance and the such) are through them.) or back to DC otherwise. I have an offered titled volunteer position (in development) an contemporary arts NPO and I'll live in the gallery if I have to, if I can't find a job or an apartment.

It's an "all directions are up" sort of scenario. I guess there is nothing redeeming left in CT.

40. That I helped someone understand something finally.
This happens in my job quite a bit. I deal with people injured on the job, and sometimes by the time they are referred to me to assess their employability, they are angry and walk into the meeting with their dukes up, because no one has really explained their rights and responsibilities to them.

They are angry, they are confused, and mostly, they feel that everyone and their dog has been telling them to jump, and their only response is supposed to be, "How high?"

I cannot tell you how many times, after I've taken the time to explain the system to them, and to answer their questions, they've said, "Thank you! No one ever bothered to tell me that before!"

Yes, there are pamphlets that every injured worker gets to explain things, but I'm telling you, not everyone understands everything in them, and sometimes, their personal circumstances aren't really addressed in the general information.

Helping people understand things, and being able to answer their questions is one of the things I love about my job.

70. I'm on the home stretch of my first academic qtr in 22 yrs!
:bounce:
I've moved past the Freak-Out, What-Am-I-Doing-Here Stage, from the early weeks of the quarter, and have moved more into the I-Can-Do-This Stage. I'm getting more in the groove, which is good, but there's still major time management issues to deal with.

My last class is on 12/20. Right now I'm working on a 7-10 pg final paper for my Basic Addictions class, looking a the impact of a particular drug/alcohol addiction on a specific population. I chose nicotine addiction and schizophrenia, since my bro-in-law is in that group. Actually fascinating stuff.

That, plus 2 final exams and I'm done!

Until then, though, I'm pretty focused on school, to the exclusion of almost everything else, including the holidays....unless I'm procrastinating on DU...

73. it's kind of mind-bending for a while, but also exciting!

I'm happy for you! I really admire that you can do it as a parent and mom. That's doubly cool!

I remember how boggled I was when I went back for post-Master's classes here - my brain hurt for a while. And there were literally REAMS of articles to read. I realized how much I didn't know. But it's all good.

Hope you all have a great holiday - it's kind of fun to work and study really hard and then have the good feelings and sense of relief of completing it all.
