Gamers: what were some of your biggest 'controller throwing' moments from games you've played?
You know what I'm talking about. It's the point in the game when you say 'Screw this, man. I'm done. This is too much.' It could be either that the game is too damn hard, or something unbelievably stupid just happened, or you come to realize the game just plain ole sucks and isn't worth finishing.

I've chosen 5 from games that I've enjoyed as a kid and an adult. Please contribute some of your own.

1. Super Ghouls and Ghosts - YOU MEAN I HAVE DO IT AGAIN??

These games are notorious for being 'kick-you-in-the-ass hard.' Super Ghouls and Ghosts is no exception. It has good music, good gameplay, and interesting stages and bosses. It's hard, but not impossible. What sucks, though, is that you have to beat the game twice to beat it. That's right...when you reach the end of the game the first time, you get sent back to the beginning to find some stupid weapon that sucks ass. You have to do it all over again, but THIS time you get to do it with a worthless PoS weapon that isn't even worth the trouble. I never bothered finishing the game. No shitty 'Congraturation!!' screen is worth that.

2. Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories - Fighting Riku for the 5,000th time.

I love the Kingdom Hearts games. I was a total skeptic at first (An RPG featuring Disney characters? Are you kidding me?), but was hooked right from the opening movie. These games are fun to play and feature great storytelling...but sometimes they run out of ideas. Case in point? Chain of Memories. For some reason, they decide that you must REALLY enjoy fighting Riku, because he just keeps coming back for more punishment. It doesn't help that he's a pain in the ass to fight to begin with. Eventually you just get sick of dealing with him. The real kick in the ass comes when you get to play as Riku. You'd think Riku, at least, wouldn't have to worry about fighting himself, right? Wrong. Riku gets to fight himself twice. That's a total of six BOSS FIGHTS you have against Riku in the game. I'm sorry, but that's way. Too. Much. It'd be like playing Final Fantasy VI and having to fight Ultros four times, that'd be...oh wait, nevermind.

3. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia - Brachyura

This giant crab really really really wants you dead. Easily the most frustrating and difficult boss in the Castlevania series. Ever. The only way to beat him is to methodically figure out every single move he does, then survive long enough to crush him with the elevator at the top of the lighthouse in which he is fought. Of course, he changes his moves multiple times over the course of the battle. You will die many, many times, but you will eventually win. But you will lose something in the process. Something you can never have back. You must live with the fact that you got your ass kicked 500 times by a giant crab.

4. Resident Evil 4 - Giant Dr. Salvador:

Resident Evil 4 is one of my favorite games. It's quite simply one of the greatest games ever made, even if it's not all that scary. Sure, there's not a zombie to be found, but 'Los Ganados' are a reasonable substitute. One that stuck out in particular was Dr. Salvador. Wearing a potato sack over his head and wielding a chainsaw, this lunatic would not stop until he's liberated your head from your body. Freedom!!! Anyway, I thought the good Dr. was bad enough on his own. But once you unlock 'Mercenary Mode' you get to meet a whole new Doctor. Standing at about eight feet tall, he wield a gigantic double-bladed chainsaw that is ON FIRE. He spins around frantically with the thing, figuring that eventually his massive weapon will find its way to your soft, vulnerable neck. Oh, and it will. Trust me. For anybody who has faced him, you'll know what I mean when I say I get a cold sweat every time I hear that crazy chainsaw of his in the distance.

5. Final Fantasy X - Yuna Doesn't Die.
All through the game, they have you thinking that Yuna's going to die at the end. Instead, the only two likable characters in the entire game die instead. I felt cheated. Yuna isn't the most irritating character in a Final Fantasy ever...that 'honor' goes to Ultros...but she is definitely the weakest female lead. They try to make her interesting, but only manage to make her ridiculously self-righteous and self-important. As interesting and cool characters are killed off left and right, we're left with her, the bigot with the stupidest hairdo ever, and the goth chick with the worst taste in clothing ever. Kimahri and Rikku are not worthy of mention, because they suck too much to be mentioned.
Did I spoil the game for you? Good. I just saved you hours of your life you never would've gotten back. Play FFXII instead.

1. any sports game when the compter decides "fuck you, no way you're winning this game"
You're team can be rolling along and suddenly it all goes to shit, you throw interceptions, can't stop their running back if you had 20 linebackers, or suddenly your hot pitcher can't get an out to save his life. :banghead:

3. sometimes the Podunk Wet Paper Sacks are capable of slaying the ultimate all-star roster
go ahead, have fun with the rosters and create the ultimate team filled only with the highest rated players and then pick as your opponent the lowest ranked team. then watch said lowest rated team magically turn into the 1996 Yankees or the 1989 Niners and kick your all-stars' collective asses

14. Man, I know what you mean about pitchers who can't get an out
Edited on Thu Dec-11-08 01:51 AM by petersond
I got MLB 2007 the show, and around the 5th inning, I usually start hitting a wall, where I can get two strikes, but they always get a hit/on base...my pitch count is low, my energy is still good, but damn, its like the game system says "Hey now, lets screw with ya some"

I don't have much of an issue with Madden though, except that interceptions are being given out like freebies...I swear sometimes every damn pass I throw is intercepted in some crazy/messed up situation, where my man was open, but the Corner, or Safety can jump backwards, while not looking at the ball, and intercept my pass, or the linebacker who can jump 12 feet in the air to intercept....

19. Don't forget the CPU's circus catches
You know, when they throw into triple coverage and suddenly your defensive backs decide this would be a good time to take a break and the receiver catches the ball with his thumb while diving.

I still play MLB 2005 alot and like clockwork, there will come an inning where your team can't catch a ball for shit while the CPU's team is suddenly filled with Gold Glove caliber defenders. You know the inning is coming, so you just hope that you're far enough ahead that you can survive it or that there's enough innings left to make a comeback.

5. I thought Ultros was cool.
That battle in the opera house is one of my favorite fights in the entire series. IMO the most irritating character ever in a FF game was Squall from VIII. What a whiny little punk.

As for Squall, you know what's funny? He's 1,000 times more likable in the Kingdom Hearts games than in FFVIII. Go figure.

tied to the absence of horses from The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.

TES 2: Daggerfall and TES 4: Oblivion have horses, so why doesn't Morrowind? It's never explained in game, but as a result navigating an island the size of Manhattan takes 2 hours. I'm not referring to doing any quests, I'm talking about flat-out walking from Sadrith Mora to the Telvanni towers on the western coast of the island. It's slower than real-time...it's like 10 miles...I can walk 10 miles in less than 2 hours and I have crap knees and am overweight...but we're supposed to believe that a hero in fighting shape can't?

11. The first stage of Gradius on the NES.
About halfway through the stage, there's a point where a bunch of lava rocks burst out from the ground that you have to maneuver your ship around.

I've tried positioning the ship in every possible place, but one stray rock ALWAYS hits it.

12. During an online game of Civilization 4.
Edited on Wed Dec-10-08 11:57 PM by Odin2005
I was the US, and nearby me were the Chinese. I had a recently build city that was at a strategically important location (my source of iron and ivory) and near that city was a newly built Chinese city. The Chinese sent a "Great Artist" special unit to their new city and gave it a "culture bomb" (boosting the city's culture level, expanding it's radius of influence), resulting in my new city being surrounded by Chinese culture. I lost my resources and the city soon revolted to the Chinese. :grr: I got my sweet revenge though, I went to war with them and conquered everything except Beijing.

The whole episode forced me to radically change by long-term strategy. While I was conquering China Rome was expanding in the interior on my continent, which is where I was originally going to focus on, building up a big land empire (favored by my civilization's "Organized" trait), but Rome's expansion in the interior forced kept me near the coast, thus I switched to taking advantage of my Civilization's "Financial" trait (NOTE: I edited the traits of some of the civilization leaders had, which is why I, playing as Washington, had the financial trait) and became a maritime and commercial power.

EDIT: Oh, and the gal playing the Romans eventually won. I couldn't make a dent in Rome during the Ancient period because of their Legions (3 Attack, 3 Defense), which are a tough nut to crack unless you 1. have a lotta Catapults AND Swordsmen (3 Attack, 2 Defense), 2. are Persia and have the Immortals (4 attack, 1 defense) at your disposal.

28. I wasn't going to reply to this thread until I read your post.
This reminded me of when I played an older version of Civilization (Civilization2 I think). They showed the map as a globe, but if you tried to go what looked like a short distance on the globe, it would send your unit(s) the whole way around the world to get there. Very frustrating, and would make you lose a game you would have won otherwise.

40. I still remember Civ 2 moments many years later.
My clearest memory is of a huge world, on the hardest level, playing on Bloodlust, where you can only win by conquering all the enemies militarily.

I was gearing up for a massive naval invasion of Russia, my most powerful rival. I then noticed that my continent and their's (a big letter O, with an inland sea in the middle), was connected by a narrow isthmus. I decided on a land route through the isthmus, as it would be faster. I used all my settlers to quickly build a railroad up the isthmus, declared war, and quickly made advances into Russia. I had consolidated all of my forces where the isthmus connected to the O, and prepared a pinser maneuver around both sides of the O, when the dirty motherfuckers nuked their own captured city, destroying my entire invasion force. So both of our militaries were crippled, and it was left up to which ever could produce a new military faster. I won the momentum, and had almost completely overrun all of Russia before the game time ran out.

13. Hmm,
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for the NES....the last level, where you have to go through all these halls that are covered with razor blades/knives, and if you touch one, you get bounced back and of course, when you bounce back you hit another blade and get ping ponged to death, and facing Shredder at the end...bleh.

The Death and Return of Superman on the SNES...the first 5 levels or so are pretty easy, and then it gets ridiculously hard, and fighting Hank Henshaw at the end...bleh, just getting to Hank you have to use all your lives to get to him, and then he just slaps you around like your NOTHING...and here I am, I'm suppose to be Superman, and I'm getting punked.

Guitar Hero III on Expert-PS2, Dragonforce-Through the Fire and Flames...I have no idea how anyone can beat this song, ever....I won't ever beat, and I gave up trying months ago. The rest of the songs I can beat, but this one...bleh, if the guitars weren't so expensive, I probably would've cut through at least 10 of them by now.

GUN-PS2, the last boss, Macgruder(who is voiced by Lance Henrixson)...I fought this little ingrate, armored SOB for at least three hours, before I finally caved in and looked online to figure out how to kill him, and they way to do so, is so...not obvious, that if I didn't look it up, I'd still be trying to kill him today....The rest of the game was pretty good though, but Macgruder...bleh.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out-NES....one hit, and you are knocked the hell out, yeah thats fair, two hits, and you lost...bleh.

Thats about all that come to mind at the moment...

16. First of all, Final Fantasy X isn't a game
it's a vaguely interactive movie which requires the rare pressing of the X button. Secondly, the worst controller throwing moments come at the end of any Mega Man game, when you have to figure out how to throw the most useless weapon in the game at one tiny little spot on Dr. Wily's latest end boss.

The object of the game is so damn simple. Yet, I cannot ever get better at any version of it on a computer or game console. I've never tried it in real life. Screw that. I suck bad enough on the computer. The most fucked up thing about it is that I don't even really like golf. Yet, I cannot resist trying every golf game I can possibly find.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

First, you have to crawl through this place, getting attacked by the most powerful monsters in the game, who at this point suddenly decide to score criticals on your Sage, THEN you have to fight three sub-bosses who are more powerful than anything else in the game, THEN you have to fight Zoma, who proceeds to shred you limb from limb.

I lost it quite a few times when I'd get attacked by a group of FireLionsFromHell with 809018342023458 hit points right before the final battle.

22. "Fate" no more
It came on my computer when I bought it as a "trial" installment, along with several other Wild Tangent Games...So, I tried it and got hooked, and bought the full game, it was challenging at first but pretty easy to figure out...It's a dungeoun game, and there are over two billion levels, but for most the game quest ends around level 40 or so...I liked the character I had and tried to reach level 1000 before quitting (this game started last April) but the game has glitches and today I totally screwed up...There's a time clock that resets the levels and a glitch makes it freeze after 72 hours so in order to continue the game right you need to use a hex manager and reset the code which I had done successfully several times before but tonight I made a mistake and forgot to back up my file so basically I'm screwed...Only option is to replace my file with the last saved one which was last June so I lost all my progress since then...But it the end run it just might make the game more interesting, I'm just using the same character and using the cheat codes just descended her 450 levels without all the experience she gained and she's doing OK...Got killed once but I was able to extract revenge by going back and killing all the monsters on that level...It's made the game more interesting for awhile but ultimately for what? It's funny how one can get attached to a game character you've made...

I miss playing computer games, computer is to old to run newer games, and I don't have a tv game system here. But if I get one, I will have to try some of those games.

Last games I played that had frustration in them with frustrating moment was

Fallout 2, once I got to the airport, could not figure out the exact method to move to next area.

It was a free flow game, which is good, you make the decisions of when and where you go, and lots of different ways to get through areas, but near the end, it was not like that. Seemed like it went back to having a perfect rehearsed trial and error method, like you talked about with the elevator.

60. Not sure.
It might have been monterey, like I said it was years ago.

It was on the mainland, and it was an enclave base. I remember the island also.

That was a good game, it did a good job of action and effect, where the NPC's reacted to actions.

I also like the turn based combat, more thinking then just dexterity, the combat model was one of my favorites.

Henchmen, skills, weapons, bartering, stems, attitude, and of coarse the pip boy 5000!. That game was way ahead of its time, superb. If I still had a copy of it, I would play it again, great game.

Searching computer now, see if it is there... Looks like I only got links to it left on computer.

If you haven't ever been to the Brotherhood of Steel base in San Fran. you have no idea how to move forward from the vertibird base at Navarro. Acquire by any means the vertibird plans and then take them back to the BoS in SF.

There is no purpose to the Military Base, it's the hardest "dungeon" in Fallout 2 and there is no real reason to go there, but it seems important so everybody fights to the bottom, kills the main mutant (the named one who makes more mutants over and over again.) and then nothing happens...so you're like "Now what?"

56. Yeah, it's Navarro I'm thinking of
I think you can get the Plasma Rifle in the abandoned base, though, so it's not a total loss. I don't remember a main mutant at the bottom making more though - that sounds more like The Master in Fallout (one of the creepiest fucking bosses ever).

62. Melchior fancies himself another Master
The mutant Melchior is at the very bottom on level 4 next to a pit of green ooze...the ooze spawns Tough Nightkin, Centaur and Floaters. Once you kill him you to get a holodisk that gives backstory but it's not vital to completing the game.

I think I remember a device in the bottom that was not put in the game. But your right from memory I remember the stairwells and using lots of grenades on that level.

29. Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Part of the frustration was my fault. I didn't know about quick save. So every time I'd get killed, I'd have to start from the beginning. Over and over and over....Eventually, I just played online before ditching it all together.

I'm stuck in that fucking tower towards the end ( Pharos, I think its called ) and I keep getting lost and the fucking tower is never-fucking-ending!!!!@@!
I have decent weapons and armor for all of the characters, and I am STILL getting my ass handed to me by those fucking Dark Skeleton bastards...

The bosses were a bitch to master. Beer/wine/liquor helped keep me from throwing the mouse, but I went through several keyboards due to spillage.

A video showing most of it. ...and it's funny if you know the game.

Edited on Thu Dec-11-08 06:35 PM by Downtown Hound
I have this game for my PC. I've beat it on insane mode with two players where you can revive each other, but with one? I can't beat the main Big Bad, General Raam. I've made it all the way to the end of the game but Raam simply kills me every time. I throw it in every now and again and take another crack at it, but the same thing happens every time. I get killed. And killed. And then killed again. Bummer.

I can not win one of the 150cc cups (maybe the star cup or flower cup). I will be so close to first on each race and at the very end (every time) something ALWAYS happens. It pisses me off to no end.

Ugh.

On a bug note, VtM: Bloodlines. The whole damn game had way too many, but one that really pissed me off...nothing like being 2/3 done with the game and then discovering that there's a bug resetting the main storyline dialogue/automated main quest assignment to the 1/3 mark. I gave up and uninstalled after that.

I think I know the place.

I found Halo2 harder than 3.

There were places on halo 2, on the legendary setting, that I tried way over 100 times to advance.

Whew. I found it better to stop hiding behind stuff and wade in with many melee attacks.

65. Easy if you know the trick...
Just follow behind him and wait until he has to dodge something. Then hit him on the rear quarterpanel while he's swerving in front of you to spin him out. He doesn't recover well and you can get ahead of him and stay there if you concentrate on your turning to avoid hitting anything.

I played the game figuring he was the last boss. But you're just starting the game basically when you beat him.

I hate how they call him the "fienlord" in the DS version of the game. x( Oh, and how they call the Mystics "fiends". :wtf:

77. The DS version is most likely closer to the original Japanese...
the original version of Chrono Trigger was translated by Ted Woolsey, who also translated Final Fantasy III, and was notorious for taking bizarre liberties with his translations. Hence, Kefka says things like 'Son of a submariner!' and other nonsense.
I actually like some of what they changed, Azala's last words to Ayla, for instance, make a whole lot more sense in the DS version.

53. Aztec level on Goldeneye (N64)
I spent forever trying to beat that damn level on 00 difficulty and I finally did it--the shuttle launch timer was down to 2 seconds and the fucking power went out. I was so pissed that I stopped playing that game for over a year and when I came back to it I couldn't even beat the level on the easiest difficulty.

I did finally beat that level two years ago when I was snowed in and had nothing better to do. Then, before posting this, I found a clip on YouTube of someone beating the damn level in 2 minutes. :grr:

63. Dude I can't even get past the first village in RE4
And I smoked my way through all the other RE games, so it must be really tough or I just really suck. I think it's because I don't know where to go - there's that locked gate with the chainsaw asshole and then you get pinned between chainsaw asshole and hordes of insane villagers and death is inevitable.

I want to love that game because I love the rest of the franchise, but getting further than 30 minutes into it might help

Also, the original TMNT game for NES, and Castle Quest for NES. Castle Quest is maybe the hardest game ever created.

68. There's a number of ways to make it through the village in one piece.
After the first house in the game where you encounter villagers, you'll find some crows on the path. Shoot one of them for a grenade. It'll be a huge help. When in the village, if you lure them towards you and stay near the entrance, you won't have to worry about any chainsaw maniacs. Use the grenade when they start to pile up. You only have to kill a certain number of them before the battle automatically ends.
OR
you can barricade yourself in one of the houses. This causes a chainsaw maniac to show up, but one of the houses has a grenade, a shotgun, and shotgun ammo, so that might make things easier.
Hope that info helps. :)

That game is friggin' sweet. But every level, starting with the third (the jet bike, don't smash into a wall going 1324 mph, level), took me at least 10-15 continues to get the timing down right. More than one controller was mistreated in the making of win.
