It looks like my big sister has had a stroke.
It happened at some undetermined point yesterday- she was having trouble talking. I was there but didn't notice anything really extraordinary. She had had a total elbow replacement two or three weeks ago and was still in major pain, so I thought it was the pain pills talking.

Apparently not- she checked into the Plano Medical Center last night. I just found out this morning, and went right there to find out what was going on.

She was fine- no pain, no weakness or limping- they stood her up and we walked down the hall and back without incident, other than a slightly elevated heart rate. They put her back in bed, and we were talking (she was writing) when suddenly, and I mean SUDDENLY her head lolled back, she started choking, and she was in a full blown grand mal seizure. This was especially surprising because such things don't happen in our family. I have seen seizures before, but never so suddenly, so close, and in someone so important to me.

They had her awake again in five minutes, but she went back to sleep almost immediately.

It shook me up big time, I'm here to tell you. It's gonna be a while before I stop seeing her face, all red and screwed up, tongue sticking out and foam on her lips, in front of me.

I'm going to work. I can't just sit here and let this get to me. I WON'T let this get to me.

I'll keep you posted.

5. When I left her husband had just arrived
but she was on the verge of sleep. She'll probably be out for a while- perhaps while she's out they'll be able to do the MRI on her they had canceled earlier (panic attack).

7. Update
I ran around all day just so I wouldn't have a chance to sit and think too much, and just now got home. I called the hospital and talked to the nurse, and my sister is doing fine- no more seizures, and she's awake and talking fairly well. She's in the middle of getting a sonogram right now, in fact.

There's hope she'll get better without any further crisis. I'm hoping it wasn't a stroke at all.

Time (and medical tests) will tell.

8. That is good to hear
and I'm glad she's getting the medical care she obviously needs. I hope you hear good news from the docs in the next couple of days.

10. Final update: Good news! It wasn't a stroke!
It turned out to be a drug reaction- apparently one of her doctors didn't pay close attention to her drug history and gave her something that clashed with something else.

She started recovering almost immediately after her seizure yesterday, and today she can talk perfectly again. No other symptoms persist. She's going home this afternoon.

Sometimes good things DO happen to good people.

11. I'm so glad to hear that it was not something more serious.
And I'm sorry that she had to go through that, and that you had to be upset for her.

I'm happy things are working out...best wishes to the both of you.

13. So glad to hear that.
A coworker of mine... his wife had a seizure in a swimmiing pool a few months ago. Her life will never be the same.

Count your blessings! :toast:
