Van Johnson died today. He was 92.
Damn.
He wasn't exactly one of my childhood heroes, but I though he was cool.
In his movies he was always the All American, clean cut, boy-next-door.

I remember mostly his WW II movies.
Always the good guy and the (usually) self effacing hero.

His 'trademark' was his red socks.
No matter what else he was wearing, formal or casual, he wore bright red socks.

I didn't know he was gay until I saw him with his boy friend at Pat O'Brien's pub in New Orleans on New Year's Eve in the 60s.
They were extremely 'lovey-dovey'.
I was *shocked*.

I've come a long way since then.
Now I understand that it's not a 'choice'.
It's just how you are.

Anyway...I'll miss the guy and the entertainment he gave us.

6. I was looking at his body of work in the IMDB
It's quite extensive, but probably mostly B stuff. The only films of his I remember seeing are "In the Good Old Summertime" with Garland, "Brigadoon" with Gene Kelly and a little known film called "Slander" with Ann Blythe. Of course I remember him from several TV shows in the '60s and '70s too.
How sad to lose him and Bettie Page within 24 hours.
