What is your favorite Western?

I ask because I saw two great ones today: Delmer Daves' 3:10 to Yuma and Sam Peckinpah's Ride the High Country. What a strange and wonderful genre that is.

7. Good question, but many movies are similar. For example, "Star Wars" is really a western.

It's just set in the future - in space.

29. Well Star Wars is a weird case

It's a Western by way of samurai movies, but it's also a WWII dogfighting movie. Certainly the whole Tattooine section is a Western - there's a pretty blatant homage to The Searchers in there.

In that they have similar stories and themes - just the settings are different.

In fact, as I'm sure you're aware, several of Kurosawa's films were turned into westerns. (i.e. Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven)

Yojimbo is totally a western, and its originally uncredited remake, "A Fistful of Dollars" got the whole spaghetti western genre going, along with the film careers of Leone, Eastwood, and Morricone.

I really like "once upon a time in the west", but "the good, the bad, and the ugly" along with the other movies in that whole trilogy thing are also fantastic.

8. I'm watching 3:10 to Yuma right now

and so far I'm liking it a lot. Westerns are my usual fare, but I watched the "Wild Bunch" last weekend and "The Magnificent Seven" is one of my all time favorite movies.

I did like 3:10 to Yuma, but I never saw the original. I liked Tombstone and Unforgiven. I can't say about any oldtime real western movie because I can't seem to make myself watch them. My husband loves them though.

My favorite is probably, The Good, Bad & The Ugly.

I don't really like the classic Hollywood Westerns at all. Even The Searchers, which I like the idea of, doesn't really do it for me. But the revisionist Westerns starting with Leone are awesome.

Jack Palance, the baddest villain ever. The location in Jackson Hole with the soaring blue sky and the snow-capped Tetons contrasting with the cold muddy reality on the ground. The two I mentioned have especially interesting stories, great acting and exquisite photography. If you like film for film's sake, they're worth checking out. As are many of the others mentioned in this thread, especially the Leone films. Ford's movies would probably bore you, just because they're quintessential Westerns rather than revisionist ones.
