Kirpans (not kripans) are ceremonial knives Sikhs wear to remind them to always be vigilant some kinda religious something or other. They really can't be used to rob banks or nothing. But it's something you might need to know about in the future, so as not to offend someone who's wearing one. So now you know.

I used to be very good friends with a devout Sikh. The knife is one of them. The others are the turban (women wear a headscarf), a metal bangle around one wrist, a comb in the hair (underneath the turban), and special underwear (true blue).
