I am worried about my dog Lolly. My husband has just taken her to the vet.
She had some really bloody poo! I read that can be a sympton of Parvo, but I have a hard time believing she would have that. She gets vaccinated. I am concerned. She isn't the healthies of dogs as is. And she is 10, so she isn't a spring chicken either.

4. Well, she takes her monthly pill but that is just a preventative thing.
Never a sure thing.

2. Parvo has a smell to it. An unforgettable smell.
Good that he's taking her to the vet. Bloody stool can be the result of a number of things. Some not so bad, some potentially fatal.

3. Well it wasn't smelly so that is good I guess.
It seemed like an awful lot of blood and it was mucous-y

5. My puppy was diagnosed with whipworms from a routine
Edited on Sun Dec-14-08 06:34 PM by undeterred
stool sample. I don't know how or when he got them and he had no symptoms at all- this was just part of a routine check. But gone untreated, this can present the symptoms you describe. Heartgard doesn't protect the dog from it.

8. Thanks for the info. I'd much rather it be something like that than
Parvo or something else very serious.

And as bad as it sounds, the treatment takes care of it with no problem.

19. That sounds like whip worm
two of my dogs have gotten them several times. If that's all it is it's easily treated. I think my guys got a shot and a few pills.

6. HGE
has she had table scraps, or been off her normal diet?

Parvo is not commonly seen in 10 year old dogs.

11. I know which is why I am perplexed.

She had a tater-tot that fell on the floor last night but that is it. The only switching up of her foods I do is that sometimes I give her the vegetarian dry food and the canned venison or the venison dry food and canned vegetarian. Always the Nature's Best brand.

17. aren't animal illnesses just the most
nerve wracking things? Honestly, I hate to say this--- but, a human vomiting or having diarrhea doesn't bother me in the least. A dog or cat? I freak the hell out.

9. Did she eat something she shouldn't have?
The whole mucus issue makes me suspect that.

12. She's safe from Parvo if she's vaccinated
It could be something bad, like cancer. OR, it could be something as innocent as an intestinal infection or she ate something like a stick or pine cone. If the poo didn't have a stench to it, it may well be nothing big. AKeep us updated -- vibes being sent to Lolly.

16. I've had a kitty and a dog who had very bloody poo
The kitty had a very bad gastric infection, but after a few days at the vet and IVs and meds, she was fine. The dog had eaten a bunch of bark off a tree (Border Collies!), and just had to have all food withheld for 24 hours.

18. Bloody poo with mucous is a symptom of stress colitis.

My Misty suffered from it. It's easily treatable, though. Best wishes for you and Lolly.

20. I have instructed all six of my dogs to send vibes to Lolly.
I will send some human ones to her as well. I know it is a bad place to be when a pup is sick & you aren't sure why. Everyone here in the house is sending you a hug. (even the two cats!) :grouphug:

23. ...
So sorry about the dog. Hope she will be okay... Here is what I found on the www:

There are several reasons that your dog might have bloody stool. Below are some of the most common reasons given by various veterinarians:

Your dog might have cancer;
Your dog might have eaten something really sharp which is cutting him/her internally;
Your dog might have internal parasites;
Your dog might have a viral infection;
Your dog might have a small intestine problem; or
Your dog might be suffering from an anal sac infection.
If your dog has bloody stool, rest assured that there are steps you can take to help your furry friend overcome this ailment.

You might want to look closely at the amount of blood because a few drops is ok;
You might want to stop feeding your dog bones;
You might want to be proactive and not allow your dog to sniff other’s poop; or
You might want to make sure that your dog is properly hydrated when you go on a hike or long walk.
If none of the above remedies work then you should consult your vet to see what exactly might be causing the problem.
