What TV shows did you like so much ...
Edited on Tue Dec-16-08 12:27 PM by redqueen
that you'd watch them over and over, or buy them on DVD?

For me only one: Father Ted.

I've already seen Fawlty Towers enough... same with the Aqua Teens and Monty Python.

Only Father Ted reaches that pinnacle of excellence for me.

How about you?

There were a couple of shows that I never watched when they were on, but I watched them later during syndication... like Quantum Leap. I liked that one. :)

8. Well, you may not have need of "The West Wing" now the way I did when it was on the air.
An astoundingly well-written TV show about a smart, dedicated, hard-working liberal President and his staff is not as necessary now with Barack Obama entering the White House as it was in the dark years of 2001-2006. Aaron Sorkin's writing contribution to the show ended with the fourth season; and a previously character-driven show became a run-of-the-mill plot-driven show for its three remaining seasons.

But those first four seasons, I never get tired of watching.

Here's a sample of the quality of the writing, taken from memory. Regarding public education over private vouchers.

"Education is the key. Education is the silver bullet. We don't need small, incremental change; we need massive, overwhelming change, and we need it today. Schools should be palaces. Teachers should be making six-figure salaries. Education should be incredibly expensive for government, and absolutely free for the citizen. Just like national defense."

92. No, it's an Irish dramedy
It's about a priest who gets transferred to a tiny village in Ireland. Kind of like a Celtic Northern Exposure. Oddball characters, gentle humor, some major goofiness, and starcrossed lovers. I really love it!

Here's a linkie--I wrote one of the longer episode guides on this fan site: http://www.geocities.com/televisioncity/9171/

99. Yes, I do
I watched every episode until season 4, then fairly sporadically after that. It became disappointing, to say the least. It seemed to get a bit darker - even Donal and Liam weren't the comic relief they used to be.

Did you ever see her in Goodnight Sweetheart? Kind of neat start to that show, but then it became predictable. I think she left that role after she got the role in BallyK.

100. Is that the one
where the guy from Butterflies could go through a doorway back to the 1940s? I saw her in a couple of eps of that, but only in passing.

I really enjoyed her TV movies, especially Happy Birthday Shakespeare (still trying to find that on video--or even the novel, which apparently is out of print :( ) and Shades, with Steven. But it was odd watching Shades, knowing they had broken up in real life.

Damn, I'm way too invested in these guys...

While it would be true that I've probably seen each episode quite a few times, I never tire of it and can watch it again and again and still enjoy it as much I did when I first watched it . To me the series represents just the absolute height of excellence and is probably the most brilliant political satire ever made

Also episodes of Unsolved Mysteries and the West Wing

132. Why you can't find Frank's Place at your local video outlet
same deal as WKRP, basically: they would have had to re-license the music (in Frank's case, much of it original, by Louisiana artists). The final straw: it dared to implicitly criticize the incoming CBS bigwig.

http://bestofneworleans.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A46471

The show was called Frank's Place, and it hasn't been rebroadcast in the two decades since, nor has it ever been made available commercially. In a time when nearly all old TV shows are reissued on DVD, it's never been released in a box set. Several years ago, the master tapes were discovered in a Hollywood trash bin, discarded by the network that owned them, headed for the dump....

What happened? As it was told to Reid a year later by, of all people, the network's Walter Cronkite, the last episode of the show (about a then-hot topic, junk bonds) had enraged Wall Street investor Laurence Tisch, who had just purchased CBS — using junk bonds. Reid is convinced that Tisch overruled network brass, who had renewed the show, canceling it and burying it for good on the basis of that episode alone: "When you piss off the big boys, they don't forget."...

Reid still has the master tapes, and continues to work on getting Frank's Place released on DVD. "I have a whole email list of people who are waiting for us to put it out on DVD," Daphne says. "Passionately waiting."

"The problem is not the show, it's the music," Reid says. (Each episode began with Louis Armstrong's version of "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?" and included original Louisiana music from the likes of Clarence "Frogman" Henry – all of which would need to be repurchased again for a DVD release.) "It cost me $2,300 a week back then just to use the Louis Armstrong theme." But he hasn't given up.

And NOLA gets screwn yet again... :eyes:

133. I hadn't heard about the junk bonds. Seriously, though, what is about New Orleans?
Why is it so hated by Republicans and rich folk? There really does seem to be a conspiracy against it at times.

It was absolutely brilliant! It's such a pity that Dermot Morgan died. From Wikipedia:

Dermot Morgan, who played the title role, died in 1998, aged 45, from a heart attack he suffered during a celebratory party the day after filming the final episode.

ETA: And The X-Files, of course, although I watched all the eps on VHS and in syndication so many times I can't feel motivated to buy the DVDs. Which are overpriced anyway.

I LOVED that show (well, till it all went to hell in the last couple of seasons)--give me a well-written, witty script and I'm a devotee for life. Amy Sherman-Palladino is my own personal goddess...despite that atrocious Jezebel James debacle.

106. All in the Family. Knew the episodes like the back of my hand.
I'd drive people crazy by quoting Archie throughout the episode. I usually could identify the plot within less than a minute of the start of the show, and I also could identify whether the theme song recording shown at the beginning was the first, second, third, or fourth version. And I could even ID it by watching it with no sound or listening to it without looking at the screen. :-)
