I spent the day helping my 85 year old neighbor clean up her house for Christmas,

Many of her family members will be coming so she wanted everything just right.

It was a nice day, she talked about Christmas when she was child growing up on the farm.

This was during the 1930's, so money was tight.

She said each kid got one toy and a socking with candy, apple and a big orange.

What was important was people getting together, not a lot of presents.

My Grandmother and Grandfather told me the same things.

I don't know many people spending a lot of money this year so looks like history will be repeating itself.

My MIL is 85 ... Very salt-of-the-earth type, too.

But ... They got "sockings" as kids?! Why did they smack those poor kids? :scared:

13. Yeah, I'm going to my brother's house

and he's probably the most well off in the family financially right now. I normally try to go for interesting and personal gifts rather than expensive ones anyway. My favorate of my quirky/interesting ones was for my stepbrother a couple of year ago. He's a beer fanatic, and he loves to cook. So I found this 'beer bread' mix that you can make by simply adding a bottle of beer to the mix. The mix came in big beer bottles. So I wrapped them up so he thought I'd just bought him some beer, then lo and behold... it wasn't beer. It was something interesting he can cook with beer. :)

I also kept one for myself 'cause they were just that nifty. :P

18. Growing up my mom got the orange in her stocking too. So she continued the tradition

and growing up in the 1970s we got oranges in our stockings too.
