MissHoneychurch posted her lovely evening photos of the Frankfurt Weihnachtsmarkt, so I thought I would post mine from a local town here in southern Bavaria.

Out of curiosity, what is "glühwein"? I looked it up and it translates to "glow wine", what does that mean, exactly?

8. It's a good quality of wine

plus spices: cinnamon, cloves, orange and lemon peels and sometimes a schuss (shot - rum?) Think of a witches brew. :D It really knocks you on your ass. I can't WAIT to go have more tomorrow. :rofl: Two of those babies, and you are flying! ;)

yes they are all unique and different. There was a show on TV last week of the Top 10 Weihnachtsmarkts in Deutschland. Some people just travel for a month and hit as many as they can. :D

17. I would love to be there- Christmas in Europe seems more natural, less

kitschy than here in the US.

30. People buy gifts, but it is alot less commercialized

than the US. Our town paper had interviews with a bunch of little kids, 8-10 y/o and all of them said they enjoyed getting together with their extended families, eating together, going for walks, decorating the tree. Only a couple mentioned wanting a toy. Very telling to me. :)

simply about buying stuff - or that's what the people who sell things want us to think.... :(

They sure do bring back the memories. We used to know a lady who owned a little gift shop in Munich. Every time she visited us, she brought little ornaments and such. I still have some of them.

27. You should see the market in Nürnberg

Now they have the ornaments! There is a store there, Katie something (it's pretty famous in Germany) they have the beautiful hand-painted tin ornaments. One could spend ALOT of euros in there.

21. I was at the Christmas markets last week

Frankfurt, Munich, AND Cologne. Plus, I got to meet the lovely MissHoneychurch.

I came back with an embarrassing quantity of Christmas cookies.

My family lived in Germany when I was little and we have lots of carved and handmade German ornaments and decorations. Just lovely!
