I want to get a few extra lens to go with it. And I hope I can start taking some great scenery shots. And storm cloud photos.

Back when I was a young lad I'd go through at least a roll a day. I had three Minolta bodies and five lenses and would just shoot anything that moved and everything that didn't. Hope you enjoy your new (awesome) toy.

2. get a wide angle, less than 20 mm for some spectacular cloud shots |
|
on a crop sensor like I believe the D40 is, go for something like 10 mm

The way to get the best advantage is use NEF. I got my D50 three years ago and it took me a month or more to get used to RAW but I did and no regrets. Get an extra hard drive to handle the size of pics: I keep my resolution set at max: NEF + jpeg (small)so it is about 10--11 mb per shot.
You must use NEF in order to keep the model of the "digital shoebox of negatives". The NEF will capture all the info on the chip without on-board processing.
Also I recommend getting the fastest card like ultra rather than the biggest. You will pay a lot more for the ultra speed but it is worth it.
Have fun!! Study the manual lots in the first month because you won't pick it up after that--

And then I may upgrade to a DS200 or higher.

But, I got some money, that came in from something I should have been paid for in 1996.
