DU Connecticutters check into this New Haven

Okay I admit I'm in Texas but my mother was born and raised in New Haven and I even lived there for a year or so when my father was in Korea. My folks live in Madison now and no trip to see them is complete without a trip to Wooster Street for the best damn pizza in the world at Pepe's. (yeah, I know Sally's has its adherants as well.)

1. I grew up in Branford, just a few miles from NH....

And according to my friends, Sally's made the best pizza in the world. I never went (duh! ) but many's the time they'd regale me with stories of getting a couple of "wheels" and chowing down. I HAVE been to Mamoun's Felafels though; usually it'd be 4 in the morning and I'd be tripping my balls off.....

It's funny, I went back to Branford this Xmas, and realized that I never noticed that there were five pizzarias for every house in the New Haven area. Weird, huh?

2. I Love New Haven

Met and married my ex-wife there, in the chapel on old campus. We lived a couple of blocks off Wooster Square on the other side from Sally's and Pepe's. I love Pepe's white clam pizza -- in my mid-20's, it was a revelation for me.

You can walk anywhere downtown, and there's tons of stuff around or you can hop a train to NYC. Didn't even have a car.

17. I hear ya about about the metro-north in New Haven.

I live near the casinos near New London/Groton and always park at the train station in New Haven for the train to NYC. It runs 24/7 and is cheaper on weekends! Never checked out any of the pizza places in New Haven though...

Lived in Stamford until a month ago.

5. I had Pepe's in December, it was really good!

My husband read about it on the internet, so we stopped there on the way back from NYC. There is not too much good pizza in New England, for some reason.

8. Pepe's..

by far, Sallys is good, but I like Pepes better. I work in New Haven and sometimes my company will buy us all lunch from Pepes. Sallys is only open for dinner.

9. Norwalk native here

but I'm in S.C. now. I was born and raised in Norwalk, and lived there till 1990 or so. The place I like to go for pizza up there is the Post Corner Pizza in Darien. I also like Duchess Drive-in for burgers and hot dogs.

10. Darien

All I know of Darien is seeing the Red Coach Inn, a now-vanished landmark, from the Connecticut Turnpike.

12. Not much to know about Darien

Just a pass-thru Post Road $uburb. I worked there for 14 years, and skated at the ice rink. The 1940s Gregory Peck film "Gentleman's Agreement," about restrictive housing (no Jews) was about a thinly disguised Darien. It's better these days. But the Post Corner has great pizza. It's right on the Post Road, downtown.

13. If yours is the smallest house in the neighborhood

and yet you still have a helicopter pad in your backyard, you know you're in Darien.

15. That goes twice for New Canaan

At least New Canaan has charm, if you overlook the fact that it's Ann Coulter's home town. The houses are even bigger there. Aesthetically, Darien has nothing going for it. Darien is the home of Alex Kelly, the rapist, whose family sent him to live the good life in Europe to avoid the cops. When his story hit the news, Darien refused to even concede that such a thing could occur in their town, wouldn't cover the story.

11. Lived in New Haven 1973-1981

Loved Pepe's pizza, and it's great to hear that Mamoun's Felafel is still around!

Is Louis' Lunch still turning out hamburgers cooked on a rotary grill and served on toast? Does Broadway Pizza still serve those wonderful tuna subs?

Sterling Library is still my favorite library ever, and those Saturday train trips into New York City are some of my fondest memories.
