Sad Day for DK :(

Well I just got my notice after 10 years. I work for a government org that helps companies be competitive in manufacturing by innovating product design process and strategies. The local administration "no longer feel that manufacturing is a direction they should be pursuing". So heres my problem my field is so specialized that its gonna be tough to find a job (especially in todays job market). Any Advice ?

1. Advice: think positive...
I know it's tough, but look at this time as an opportunity to try something new. If you hyave access to the resources, consider retraining for something completely different.

I have a friend who was a Master Chef. He decided, after a few years, that he wanted to do something else, and now he's a CNC Machine Operator, and he's never been happier.

I don't believe humans are wired to do the same kind of work day in, day out, for decades; we need variety, we need challenges.

Good luck, DK.

2. Consulting?
Is there any way you could use your skill set as a consultant? Could you join talents with others who are being laid off in your workplace and form a consulting group?

Just a thought. Good luck.

8. Sorry about the layoff
but it sounds like you have many marketable skills. Know how to work with bureaucracies. Evaluate grant applications. Understanding product design, business strategies, and manufacturing. Without knowing more, maybe investment capital companies? Maybe corporate research for a large corporation. Maybe a bank business loan department. Good luck.

12. I worked at a manufacturing company in CA until Aug of last yr
We had lots of folks from the state teaching us Lean Manufacturing etc. Is that what you did?

It would be good to be a consultant with a manufacturing software company. Look into ERP software companies.

15. You have transferable skills!
If you have expertise in mfg process design, etc., you have transferable skills. Think outside of the daily tasks you have been doing, and think about what you CAN do. Think about industries you've worked with. Think about ways to present your expertise in a way that will be attractive to potential employers.

Don't get DOWN. (Hard to say, I know. I've been there.) Get BUSY.
