Poll question: Water Source?
What kind of water do you drink?

I currently have bottles of filtered water delivered but I'm considering a home filter system.

1. has anyone noticed the growing number of "water elitists" in
the past few years? you know the type, the "I won't drink any water out of a tap", or "do you know how unhealthy tap water is for you?". can't stand em:) i'm one of the "hey, if it was good enough for my grandma, and she lived to be 98, then it's damn well good enough for me!". down with the water elitists!

5. But they weren't dumping as much stuff into our water then...
Like industrial chemicals or chlorine to cover up those chemicals. I'm worried about the iron content in our water, so I won't drink it unfiltered. And if it gets really bad (where the chlorine smell is so strong that it burns your eyes when you turn on the tap), then I'll buy the distilled water from the grocery store.

But I've also lived in places where I didn't have to worry about the water so much - it really depends on the area you live in.

6. I use Brita....
It's cheaper than Pur, and it seems to work ok.

7. My Brita-filtered water makes better coffee
Soup, spaghetti, and oatmeal is better too. Even the dog likes it better than that chlorine-smelling city water with a few other undesirable flavors in it.

10. Don't Know How I Got By w/out It
It's a shame we can't all live in the Adirondacks and have the best-tasting water in the world!

Until then Brita will have to do it for me.

My cat gets Brita-filtered water in her dish...
I'm not trying to unduly spoil my cat, but I figured that if I won't drink it unfiltered, I can't do that to her. Glad to hear that another pet owner does the same...

Pour her a fresh bowl-full out of the pitcher from the 'fridge and she goes lap, lap, lap, lap, lap, lap, lap!

18. Me, too...
city water here is lousy, and I got tired of paying the price for Deer Park. Coffee, cooking, the cat, ice cubes... Everything ingested gets filtered water.

Tried the experiment of setting up a big pot and some pipes on the stove to distill the water, but it's too much of a pain to deal with.
And insane in the summer.

12. Just think of your monthly bill to the beer company...
You'd have to make sure to pay it, or they'd shut off your tap.

8. You can build, for about $2000 dollars a home filtration system that
produces water that is essentially hydrogen and oxygen.

Here are the ideal components: An ion exchanger (to remove Calcium, Magnesium and Radium and many other heavy metals) a carbon filter, to remove most organics, radon, a UV irradiator (to kill any contaminating organisms). The latter component also serves to remove any perchloroethylene that gets past the carbon filter (dry cleaning fluid) which is a component of most of the water in North America, including rain water.

The system should be maintained annually. The quality of the water of such a system can be better than many commercially sold bottled waters.

16. What? No nuclear reactor to power it?
(an inside joke from the E&E forum) Actually, my brother was selling such comprehensive water filtration systems to nursing homes and restaurants. $2000 does not sound like a bad price, either.

11. We have a fridge dispenser
It's handy. They add a lot of chlorine to the water at this end of the city, as the source is a lake where thousands of birds hang out. The north end gets it out of the river, and it's as good as the bottled stuff. Right, SLB?

13. After working for an environmental lobbying group and
learning too much about our local ground water, I will not drink anything but distilled water.
You can get home distillers for anywhere from $150 to thousands.
I have a distiller at home, but have distilled, bottled water delivered at work.
It makes the best coffee, tea, & best for cooking also IMHO.
