Rat Terrier Problem-Need Advice
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 10:34 AM by BronxBoy
Hi All:

We have a 2 year old rat terrier. We are having a problem with him. Although he is walked and put outside on a regular basis, he still finds it necessary to piss on stuff. I'm really starting to think it's more of a territorial thing rather than an housebreaking thing. Our other dogs are large breeds and we don't have this problem. This is my first small dog so I don't know if this is a common trait.

Thanks for any advice!

1. Sometimes you have to go back to basic training with the
little dude :-). Do you catch him lifting his leg on stuff, or is it after the fact? If you catch him doing it, you can say "No ___ (his name)" in a loud voice and carry him outside to do his thing. Then praise him for doing it. This will take consistency - re-grooving. Also, don't let him see you cleaning up after him - make sure he is outside.

Good luck. It will work out.

4. Thanks
We never see him do it. When we do, we do as you suggested.

He's a sneaky little shit.

2. Not to ask the obvious question...
but is he neutered? If not, I'd say it's definitely a territorial thing.
