they are calling for windchills well below zero tonight and my shepperd alpha male REFUSES to come in.

Granted he is safe.I set up a way for them to get under the house and they stay warm enough but DAAAMMMn.IT'S COLD!!!

1. my female
My female shepard LOVES the cold. For about 10 minutes. Then she wants in. Then out. Then in. Then out....

She's getting old (14) and has arthritis and nerve degradation in her legs. Probably feels good on her legs. So I let it slide....

2. that's gotta be a shepperd thing then
he does the same thing.Get him in...within 5 minutes he's wining to get out as long as it's cold out and he's perfectly healthy.

On a bad note his main squeeze...my neighbors shepperd mix got grabbed by a bear this weekend. She looks like she may live but damn she looks rough

3. Shepard's are the greatest.
>>my neighbors shepperd mix got grabbed by a bear

Wow - surprised there is anything left of her. Hope she pulls through, she sounds like a fighter.

6. oh they are both fighters
biggest babies in the world...until it's time to fight and they are then scary.I saw the two of them tear a raccoon to shreds when it got near their pups. What a bloody mess that was.

A bear is a bit much for them though. She's a mess.Half one ear is gone.It tore a chunk from her neck. It's about as bad a bear attack as we have had here and it isn't the first.

The shepperd that started my whole clan was terribly wounded by I assume the same bear.If I get a shot he's going down.

5. We wish we had a fenced in yard
Our Border Collies love the snow and hate to come in. Last winter, we had over a foot of snow, and Mick dug himself a little hole and slept out there for a couple hours. He just refused to come in.

7. My dog loves being out in the snow
and he likes the coldest places in the house. He doesn't have a choice about coming in, but if he did I don't think he ever would.

10. on a serious note
people are scared of Shepperds..don't be as a breed.Of course there are asswipes who make them mean but they are as a breed a VERY social and bonded dog.Once they bond with your family they would literally die to protect you.

I love my boys. The wife has infiltrated our domain with shih-tzus and terriers but the big boys will always run the roost.

BTW..I think I've said if anyone needs a rescue of a dog my hill is never full enough.I love any dog that needs a home

16. We adopted her from the pound three weeks ago
She's TINY (25 lbs) so we think there might be something else in there. She's a real sweetie, and we are socializing her with treats and love. :D

11. Mick hates the rain
He loves water, but hates being rained on.

He'll lean against the house trying to stay under the eaves when it's even just drizzling.

22. When we didn't have neighbors to worry about Mick barking at, he used to have a lot more yard time
I seriously could manage to go months without seeing him go to the bathroom. He doesn't even like to do it in front of other dogs.

25. that's so funny
my BC/GSD mix loves all snow, and loves to swim. He'll splash around in 2 inches of water, wallowing in it. Can't keep him out of little streams. But cold rain? He makes a face and doesn't want to go out!

9. I had a St. Bernard when I was 18-19
When he was a puppy, he'd demand to go out in the middle of a snowstorm and would roll in the snow. When we tried to call him in, he'd refuse to come in because he was having a blast.

12. Oh hell yeah -
My 100 pound Siberian Husky absolutely freaking loves the cold. During the winter he sleeps outside most nights. We insist on his being in if there is precipitation in the forecast - otherwise he's outside. If we don't let him sleep outside, he comes in the bedroom and bugs us until we put him out. As a kid I had GSDs and they too loved the cold.

13. Sylvie of the Frozen North.
Georgia heat saps her energy, a bit, we think. She comes fully alive and nutty in our coldest weather.

I wish I still had some of the pictures of her in the snow--coal black shiny coat, pink tongue, bright
eyes against the glaring white snow--but they were all destroyed in our house fire. She was beautiful.

19. Lots of them:
Australian sheperd
Irish Setter
Great Pyrennes

They all hail from cold areas & have that super thick coat.

But being in The South, they suffered in the summers.

Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 10:38 PM by WakeMeUp
:D

Edit to add that later on we also had a Siberian Husky for two years. Both are absolutely beautiful and intelligent dogs. Both loved to plow through snow and many nights refused to come inside. Because of their breed they never showed any ill effects.

26. Wish the same was true of our Husky.
Her first sight of snow - wouldn't go outdoors at all. Only went because she had to go do her business and then she didn't venture far away from the door - just did her business and scratch - wanted back in right away.

We don't get a lot of snow here... subsequent snows she's been OK with but that first one I remember because you'd expect Siberian Husky and Snow go together.

Mark.
