Better to give, but ...

When I was 12, times were very hard. My mother had been saving Green Stamps
to buy a 10-speed bicycle for me, but just before Christmas she asked me if
I really wanted the bicycle. Since Christmas was coming, the Green Stamps
books could be used to buy presents instead. If not, we had enough books to
get my bicycle.

I decided to use the books for Christmas presents for my siblings and my
mom. On Christmas Day, everyone opened up their presents. I know it is
better to give than to receive, but looking under the Christmas tree and
nothing was left under there, I started crying. I hadn't received a gift.

My little brother said look again. I noticed a very small piece of wrapping
paper under the tree. It was a bubblegum ball. My brother said, "I was
walking down the street and I found a penny on the sidewalk. So I bought you
the bubblegum ball for Christmas." I put it in my mouth right away. It was
the best Christmas gift ever.
