VW TDI Engine.
I'm looking at VW's right now. I have heard that I might get 25k for a new car from relatives when I get my A.A. this summer. Does anyone own a VW with this Engine? How is it? Is it like most car-sized deisels that go from 0-60 eventually, or does it have halfway decent pickup? Are these engines expensive to mainian and repair?

1. new generation of german diesels
are very good performance wise.really hard to tell about reliability since it is a new engine. call a Volkswagen service center and ask them about how much routine maintenance costs. check google for the model of the car, you`ll find out alot of info there

2. This all sounds cool, but
In some cases, It's better to wait a couple tears for before getting new tech like this so that the bugs can be worked out.

4. Just get it in a dark colour.
Diesel exhaust stains paint.

But, yes, the new diesel turbos are really quick and efficient. Reliable, too.

One caveat: they don't love extremely cold weather, so keep that in mind if yu're up North.

7. I know.
My dad drove a Deisel Chevy truck when he worked as a wildland firefighter for the Wisconsin DNR. On a cold morning it could take a really long time to get that engine started.

9. When I was on Arctic Duty, we had to keep some...
...of the diesel vehicles running literally non-stop, from September through April. If they ran out of fuel or stalled, they couldn't be started again until the thaw.

3. We discuss the TDI often in the Energy & Environment forum
yes, they don't take off like a rocket, but like the commercial I hear from Canada says "I got 750 kilometers on a tankful". Some of my enviro buddies task VW for not telling the customers that the vehicle has high Nitrogen Oxide emissions (creates smog and acid rain). I am not sure what the tailpipe particulates situation is. See if you can source biodiesel and it will run cleaner.

Does that make sense?

6. Yes.
I like it so much, I won't be going back to gas! B-)

You should visit the TDI Club: http://www.tdiclub.com

They are not like the old Mercedes diesels. My 90hp TDI has decent acceleration, 0-60 in 11 sec. and is pretty clean and quiet. VW is currently selling the 100hp TDI instead, so there will be even more power.

I bought my TDI in 2001 and haven't had a problem it.

The engines are very durable and should run for a minimum of 300k miles. The current ones require a timing belt change every 80k miles, and that costs a few hundred dollars. Other than that, just change the oil. They don't even need spark plugs.

Gas engines are subject to high wear and much less durable.

Also, you can run TDIs on 100% renewable fuel, which you can't do with gassers. http://www.biodiesel.org
