I used the day to get as far away from humanity as possible (camping in the desert, mostly) and do some spiritual recharging for a few days.

Now that I'm married, our Xmas is very low-key; a good dinner, wine, and being w/ my wife and our kitty. That's all I need.

I'm with you on the restaurant thing. Once my kids passed the age where they were likely to feel angst if they couldn't compare their massive Xmas haul with their peers, we pretty much decided it was stress and expense we didn't need for a holiday we don't believe in. They already get pretty much everything they want/need and it just seems silly. If we do anything, we make a Yule log (decorated with shit we want to get rid of or wish for) and have a bonfire.

It's significantly reduced that maelstrom of stress from Halloween through New Year's, except. . . for at least the last three years, I've declared that I wasn't going to kill myself making a huge meal for the holidays. (Yeah, we'll do the meal because the rest of the world comes to a halt and it's not like there's anything better to do.) I work graveyard and it's just too much work for too little appreciation. We figure there ought to at least be a Chinese buffet open, right? NOPE. I've lost count of the Thanksgivings and Xmases where we've driving in circles looking for something--anything--open. We've even tried getting our arses in gear earlier than usual, as early as 5 o'clock. Apparently, it would be necessary to drive an hour and a half up to Tampa to find civilization. Without fail, we end up going to WM in disgust (that place never closes) and coming home with frozen pizza, TV dinners, or whatever other crap we have strength to throw together. I should know by now to keep an emergency Tofurky dinner in the freezer for such occasions. Bah, fucking humbug. Is it asking too much to find some egg rolls and Gen. Tso's tofu for our heathen celebrations? :(

If nothing else, this (FL) is the land where old people come to die. Hasn't Gran earned the right to stay out of the kitchen by now? Someone's missing out on a huge marketing opportunity here.

on thanksgiving. so was the black angus.

i'm originally from new york and almost all restaurants were open on xmas. the diners were open 24/7 and had great food. you could get anything, i.e., eggs, turkey, fish.

i'm surprised that florida doesn't have restaurants open. i would think down in miami or boca where there's a large jewish population they would be open.

one year when we lived in new york we drove to south carolina to spend the holidays with my mom and sister and her family. we decided to leave for home xmas evening. well it was scary. we couldn't find a gas station open and we were tired and really needed some coffee. i don't remember which state it was, but finally found a gas station open and they had coffee.

Unfortunately, I'm on the sucky left coast, where it's just generic white people and they roll up the sidewalks at 9 pm.

A year ago, our real estate values were going up as much as 20% and more every month. If I'd had my shit together, I would've sold whilst the selling was good. Unfortunately, I still don't know where I ultimately want to wind up. I just hope to figure it out before global warming makes it moot (I'm about 8' above sea level and two blocks from the water).

that's when we got our first cat. it was around 1977 that i started to find xmas to be a pain -- the crowds, the shopping, the traffic. we celebrated it for many years for the sake of family.
