17. Cheshire Bridge-Lenox Rd one of the most diverse in America
For restaurants, this neighborhood has Ethiopian, Lebanese, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Cuban, Russian, Greek, French, Italian, plus a Jr Varsity and the Colonade, a famous restaurant for old style southern cooking. That's just one aspect of it's diversity.

4. Age, gender and income are well integrated...but...
The neighborhood is overwhelmingly white, with a growing Hispanic population.

It's otherwise a diverse few blocks -- we've got houses worth $90,000 and houses worth $210,000 (which is still below the county median, I think); some of the houses at all price points are duplexes and triplexes. There are young couples and families, older empty nesters, retirees, student renters. Engineers, bus mechanics, teachers, unemployed. A little bit of everything.

very segregated community that is my neighborhood, so it's slowly becoming integrated.

Now the neighborhood has a small sampling of American white, African Americans, and a number of Asians, most of whom seem to actually have come here from Asia - mostly Japanese and Korean. Seems like the only ones from foreign countries moving into the neighborhood are the ones from Asia. Haven't come across, say, any Germans or Nigerians. And of the ones who are breaking the racial barrier of the neighborhood, they're mostly younger and single, or partnered, generally still students or just starting out in life. I haven't seen any children from the newbies yet - not that they might not be around, but they're pretty darn few if they exist.

7. I live in a small town in Mississippi...
It's very integrated in all aspects.

It's funny to me when people from very "white" parts of the north criticize Southerners for being racists. We live together, work together, play together, and worship together. We have confronted our historical problems and have not only survived but are thriving.

14. I've always been surprised by that whenever they send me down south...
That, and the wonderful food. And the friendly people who just love to talk... and talk ... and talk some more...! :)

Anyway -- for Milwaukee county, my neighborhood's reasonably ethnically diverse. It's a suburb, majority caucasian, but it has close to the national average of African-Americans and Asians. No real poverty, though. No fantastic wealth, for that matter - those people like to settle in the solidly Republican suburbs in Ozaukee and Waukesha counties.

12. JUST this morning, my daughter and I saw a white couple walking their
dogs... a rare sight on our street, in the historic West Adams area of Los Angeles.. We're in a neighborhood that's primarily black and latino.

The area is ripe for that so-called re-gentrification, I suppose. I bought there because it's quiet, lovely and undiscovered by yuppies yet. I'm sure it'll be fashionable soon enough when everyone gets tired of paying half a million for a cottage stuffed next to a high rise, like in west hollywood...

15. Very....My Son's Elementary School is:
White: 46.7
Asian: 30.3
Afr. Am: 15.8
Hisp: 6.8
Am Ind 0.4

We moved here after living in Westchester County NY, in which the Elementary School had more African American teachers than students and there were no hispanic children. In short, we lived in lily white heaven. Before that we lived in Great Falls, VA, again, lily white heaven. The police reports there generally dealt with rabid animals, mailbox vandalism and noise complaints.

We really do like it here better, we have more friends, our kids have more friends. However, with few exceptions, each ethnic group socializes within its own boundaries even though you can go down our street and see Asian, Black, Asian, Asian. Black, Asian, White, Asian (our street is particularly Chinese). Also, the police reports are much scarier, rapes every week, murders, assaults etcetera. We have gang activity not far from here as well.

We're in northern Montgomery County Maryland, near NIST and all that Genome stuff y'all been hearing about.

Used to buy the Daily Fishwrap from a Chinese guy, but now it's an Indian guy. Went out for a while with a Greek woman, after the Irish, and Puerto Rican women. Buy a lot of groceries from the Brazilian across the street, and every so often eat in the Argentinian and Cuban restaurants. Buy other stuff from the Black businesses in town, and the Blacks and Hispanics in my building are great neighbors.

Run into Phillipinos, various other Asians and a lot of Arabs around here, too. And Orthodox Jews with the big schul a few blocks away.

Bunch of others around. There's a Little Italy on the south side of town, not too far from Polish Hall.

Damn near everyone in this town has an accent.

Everybody's white and most of them have generations of history in the US. (Some of them are rednecks, though. Does that count as a color?)

The guy across the street is from Germany. He still has an accent - and an extended family. (I think that's great!)

We could use a whole lot more diversity and I could use some neighbors with new recipes.

Hyde Park is the neighborhood of the University of Chicago, on Chicago's South Side. Our realtor said that Hyde Park residents go by an unspoken agreement that they want integration to work, and so far as I can see it does. The area, unlike areas that integrated later, has a strong African-American political and cultural presence.

43. Funny story...
A few years back we were over in Telluride, CO (about an hour away) having dinner. We wound up staying until the bars kicked us out (big surprise there), and caught a lift with a shuttle van heading out to the parking lot.

So it's a cold, dark, snowy night, but the roads looked good. The driver was Australian; a Texan on board asked him if he was going slow on purpose.

"Yeah," he said. "Got to watch out for the black ice on the road."

Long pause.

Texan: "Really? Wow. I haven't seen any black guys since I've been in Colorado." :D

55. The little block I live in is pretty white
although there's a Hispanic family at the end of the block. The larger neighborhood is pretty much proportional with the population breakout for western Washington overall - a fair number of Native Americans (they're Muckleshoots where I live), lots of Pacific Islanders, some Asians, some African-Americans, some Hispanics, and about 70% white or multiracial.

The school district I work for is another story. Because we're in one of the few affordable-housing areas left in the Seattle area, our population is at least 25% English-as-a-second-language, with a very high population of Somalians, Hispanics, and Pacific Islanders especially.
