Thank you so much for sharing it. My stepfather was adopted, too, but unlike your granddaughter, he's never been able to know who his birth parents were, and it tears him up inside. He's trying to find out now, but he keeps running into legal barriers. Ugh. I really think open adoptions (or at least semi-open ones) are a wonderful thing for most adopted children. There are probably some children who don't *want* to know who their birthparents and grandparents were/are, but I think most adoptees would cherish that information.

I'm so glad you are able to keep in touch with her, and I'm glad your daughter feels comfortable enough to start making contact now.

I was very much into horses when I was younger ... I can relate to the intensity of "horse fever."

5. Oh boy, me too.

I was (and still am!) a "horse girl." I had gazillions of horse books, lots of horse toys, and I tried to draw horses (although they ended up more like HSOs (horse-shaped objects.) I won honorable mention in a contest by our elementary school's library to design a new dustjacket for a favorite book. I did mine for "King of the Wind."

I never got to ride, but I still harbor dreams of having my own acreage someday, along with a stable of horses, twenty rescued dogs, and thirty rescued cats, lol.

16. I've still got my Breyer horses and my Marguerite Henry books.

I eventually did get a horse (a dark bay, almost black, Quarterhorse/Morgan gelding) when I was a kid ... I wore my parents down. Plus, we lived in a very horsey part of the S.F. Bay Area, the weather was fabulous for horse keeping, and we had plenty of trails in those golden hills. I look back and marvel at how lucky I was -- so few kids get that dream fulfilled.
