10. I must confess

I don't own a copy of Grey's. My day job is as a project editor for anatomy & physiology college textbooks! But I did just read "The Anatomist" which I recommend: a dual story about the two men who wrote and illustrtated Grey's joined forces, as well as the author's stint in an anatomy lab class.

16. Another fascinating story: John Harrison

Navigators long needed a reliable means of calculating longitude.

Clocks and chronographs were never reliable enough due to the motion of the ocean, and temperature changes.

If a reliable timepiece could be developed, sailors would be able to accurately place themselves on the globe with respect to longitude and latitude, skills without which exploration, intercontinenal cartography, and safe world travel (and conquest) would not be possible.

Harrison solved several problems and finally invented a reliable timepiece, but the British government delayed for years his receipt of the award.

Yes, it is a section of a spleen.

The spleen is most useful while we're growing up, manufacturing blood cells and it serves as a filter.

Once we are grown, we don't need them so much.

In fact, they're a sort of liability because a trauma to that part of a body can rupture the spleen and cause serious internal bleeding.

Thus the fact that a person without a spleen is arguably a better candidate for activities that might cause trauma there.

I was in a boating accident which resulted in punctured lung, broken ribs, ruptured spleen.

It was the spleen that nearly killed me as the hospital missed it and sent me home.
