Anyone else go HDTV for Christmas this year?

Technically, we're not HD just yet - the 32" HDTV 720p LCD television is still sitting in its box, patiently waiting for me to get through the manual and unpack the darn thing.

The first time I saw HD was at the Dallas Museum of Art, some 15 years ago if my memory serves me, and the picture was just gorgeous. Then again, the only way I could have bought an HD set back then is if I had $15,000 lying around as well as a spare room to dedicate to the gigantic set. And honestly, I'd be perfectly happy with another non-HD set, but it's getting harder and harder to find such a set in stores - everyone is going exclusively HD around here. And our current set is dying. The raster lines are rolling from the top of the screen and interfering with the rest of the picture, the image is starting to shimmer and shiver, etc. So, here we are.

Looking forward to the kickass picture, but not looking forward to the install. It's still a huge set.

1. I bought an HDTV as an early Christmas present to myself...

I went out on Black Friday and picked up a 32 inch LCD Samsung flat screen. It was on sale for $499 at Circuit City and I am so glad that I bought it. I needed a new TV for my bedroom, my old one was a 12 year old 20 inch that had a slight greenish tint to the picture. I thought such an upgrade would overwhelm the room, but surprisingly it doesn't. Just make sure if you have a cable box that it is an HD one, if not you can exchange your current one for it down at your cable company. Also don't forget your HDMI cables for the best picture...monoprice.com has cheap prices, I got one for like $6 as opposed to $40 for the Monster Cable version in the stores.

We've got them both. Well, actually, ours is a Super NES - ginbarn's favorite game of all time is Super Mario World.

9. I used to play Super Mario World like it was my job...

I had every level beaten except Bowser's Castle and somehow my game memory got erased, I don't know how it happened but I almost cried that day...I used to love playing Donkey Kong Country too, I stupidly gave away my SNES for reasons still unknown to me.

I found those games on an emulator a few years ago but it's just not the same

Maybe it's time for you to rediscover that game. ginbarn and I have collectively explored every nook and cranny of Super Mario World (including all the secret levels), and it was worth it.

6. A couple years ago.....

I LOVE old movies so I subscribed to Directtv's HD extra channels which includes MGMhd. Whenever I am forced to watch a movie in "normal" TV I feel like I need to clean my glasses.

7. We got one in the spring and a blue ray player as well.

the set itself is nice looking for a tv and the blue ray player is awesome.

8. The only HDTV that I've seen is highly detailed

yet suffers from a lack of depth...the furthest thing appears as close as that which is actually closest. I hope that this is because of the particular set I was watching- please let us know if yours is superior...happy holidays!

12. My parents bought us one

A Vizio 32" 720p LCD ($400 at Costco!). Of course, we don't have HD programming, but I'm looking into it to see if I can get a deal. Mainly, though, we enjoy it for the video games in HD!

13. I've a 720p set already...

In time, I'll get a Toshiba Regza 1080p set - there's a $1200 model that uses an 8-bit panel and has a fantastic color and shadow gamut. Perfect for graphics manipulation, but that's going to be around June or July. (6-bit panels suck what comes from a lemur's kidneys)
