willing to step forward and acknowledge credit other than possibly John Smithee...

This is a possible travesty, although I don't know. I liked Elton John's early stuff, like Tumbleweed Connection. Of course I liked the Ohio Express and the Pipkins "Gimme Dat Ding" too once upon a time... "Yesterday, when I was Young"...

For the record, Jeff Tamarkin's excellent Jefferson Airplane - Jefferson Starship - Starship bio, "Got A Revolution," tells the strory of how drunken mullet boy Donnie Baldwin (Starship's drummer, bottom left in the photo) beat the shit out of singer Mickey Thomas (top left) so severely that he required emergency surgery to REBUILD HIS FACE. Seriously busted him up. The band's publicists lied about it for a while...said that Mickey "defended the honor" of a girl who was being messed around by her boyfriend...but the truth eventually came out.

I always thought that "Madman Across The Water" was the definitive album. When Elton started wearing the Donald Duck outfits on stage the quality of his music...or lack of it...rose to the occasion.
