Safe haven for DUers who find "progressive rock" both dull and pretentious
I generally don't write off an entire genre of music as being unworthy of my time and attention, but I have to say this: I don't now like, nor have I ever liked, progressive rock!

Hell, I even resent the name "progressive rock." Why? Because it suggests that rock music moves in a ladder-like progression of quality. Anyone who pays close attention to the music's history knows that to be patently false, unless you truly believe that Chubby Checker was better and more important than the Beatles.

King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Gentle Giant, Yes.... That music bores the living shit out of me! I'll take doo-wop, R&B, jazz, rockabilly, gospel, Motown, the blues, soul, funk, punk rock, New Wave, or even disco and rap over that stuff any day of the week! Finally, the only thing I find duller and more pretentious than progressive rock is the genre's fans!

OK prog-rockers, you may browbeat me now. Go ahead, tell me how shallow, ignorant and stupid I am because of my vulgar, philistine tastes. I should warn you, though: I've encountered plenty of self-righteous prog-rockers in my time and have heard their stock arguments dozens of times. So please, try to come up with something original! Thanks.

1. It's better on acid
Seriously.

Not that I've ever done such a thing.

I don't much like prog rock either. I also don't like jam bands. However, I believe in different stroke for different folks. Also, the people who listen to both kinds of music are generally more interesting to me than a typical Britney or mainstream country fan, so I reserve my judgement.

2. I'm with you, baby.
Although I reserve the right to keep Jeff Wayne's totally deranged War of the Worlds.

3. All right, I confess...
Yes bores the living bejeebers out of me. I'm tired of most of ELP. I do like some King Crimson, and I'm fond of most of Pink Floyd, but I'm with you - I'll take Motown over any of it, any day.

I don't much like Rush, either. I find a lot of "prog rock" painfully non-melodic. Not all of it, mind, but some of it really grates on my nerves.

I *will* listen to it before I listen to disco or rap, though. And I'll listen to dogs howling discordantly before I'll listen to country.

5. I like "In the Court of the Crimson King."
But yeah, as a rule, I loathe prog-rock.

That's why I had to leave RandomKoolzip's party early. Once he broke out that limited-edition green-vinyl copy of "Tales from Topographic Oceans," I knew it was time to split.

6. Argh! "Tales from Topographic Oceans."
Over the period of a decade, I tried on four separate occasions to listen to that album from start to finish. But I never got more than about 15 minutes into it before I became drowsy and had to throw on something with a pulse. :boring:

7. Mmmm .. Depends

KC, PF, and on rare occasions, ELP, had their uses. The first two, I wouldn't buy their albums, but I could tolerate it at someone else's house. Gentle Giant, I just never understood the appeal.

Remember the outfit It's a Beautiful Day and their song "White Bird?" Everytime I heard that tune it made me wanna throw the fucking radio into a wall.

OTOH, I've adored the likes of Kate Bush, Julian Copeland & Peter Gabriel.

8. I feel you

I've tried but just can not listen to that music.......it does nothing for me other than make me sleepy.....the only exception I would make is Pink Floyd (don't know if they're prog-rock) but I do like some of their work but all the other groups mentioned.....no thanks.....

9. Pink Floyd?!
Is nothing sacred anymore?

Just curious, as I've heard the term bandied about... what exactly is "progressive" rock? The only bands I am familiar with off your list are PF and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Who else are we referring to here? Is Jethro Tull on the list? Steely Dan?
