Scariest roads?
The scariest trail thread got me thinking about my trip to Chihuahua this past spring. What is the scariest road you've ever driven? I drove down and back up THIS in a ford 350 15 passenger van with 7 other people and a crapload of luggage:

Its a 35 mile single lane dirt road that descends 6000 feet.

3. Thats pretty scary...
The one I can think of (a friend drove, I was too chicken) is one in Colorado past Estes Park that takes you up into Rocky Mountain National Park its windy and narrow and very high up...We drove it up to about 12,000 ft.

2. We drove on the Million Dollar Highway in southern Colorado
Cliffs plunging down to ... death. Not much of a shoulder. My hands were sweating.

4. For me, it's not the road, it's the conditions. I've driven in some blizzards I shouldn't have been
driving in. Driving by memory is not recommended.

15. No way!
I have acrophobia so bad I can't even use a step ladder. Just looking at those pictures of 1000 drops with no guard rails gives me the willies. It'd take a hell of a lot of strong drugs to get me on that thing.

6. It wasn't so much the road as the fact that my brakes gave out coming down it
About 4 or 5 miles downhill. In the snow. I did some fancy downshifting that day. :scared:

That is one gnarly ass road you have pictured there. I'd hate to lose my brakes on that one!

7. Washington State Highway 18 used to be called the 'highway of death'.
Lots and lots of head-ons, rollovers and black-ice accidents.

It's not that bad anymore, though.

10. I4 across the spine of Florida. It's not the road that's scary
it's the moron shitcock drivers on it.

13. I wondered if somebody was going to mention Florida drivers
world famous - Boston too, I have heard, for US locations.

11. In Taormina, Sicily, there's this zig-zaggy road going up...
...the mountainside. I don't know what it's called but it scared the crap out of me.

16. Highway 23, aka, "The Pig Trail", NW Arkansas
It has several hairpin turns and steep drop-offs. It's a beautiful ride, but it's murder on your brakes.

but after seeing that picture I think I've decided I don't mind it so much any more.
