Fuck Time Warner Cable.
Fuck them up their stupid asses. They are losing all their Viacom channels now due to some contract dispute. On Jan 1st you lose Comedy Central, Spike, Nickelodian, MTV and bunch of other channels. I'm glad I use one of the other cable companies now or I'd be switching to satellite.

3. Par for the course for Time Warner.
When I lived in Austin we were without our NBC affiliate because Time Warner was in a pissing contest with the station's owner. Time Warner has forgotten that their reason for existence is to provide content.

Of course I have Comcast now, and I'd be shocked if they were much better.

16. I've had Comcast for a couple of years now...
And although they suck for a variety of reasons, they have never gotten into the kind of pissing contests Time Warner gets into on a regular basis. The most I can complain about right now is having to pay for a special "package" if I want to get NFL network...

Decent company not as many HD channels as Time Warner and no On Demand but at least they got Comedy Central! Suck it Time Warner. I hope they lose a lot of customers.

Yeah, fuck Time Warner. Fuck Viacom too. This is a little game both content producers and content re-broadcasters play on a continual basis.

10. Time Warner is LEGENDARY with that ploy
I forget what we lost 3 years ago when they were in one of their countless contract disputes.

We now have DirecTV and are very happy.

20. It is a ploy ...

But it's a ploy played by both sides and all companies. It'll come up with DirecTV where you are eventually. There was a major dispute a couple years ago with both DirecTV and Dish over local HD channels, and those channels, including the non-HD signal, went dark for months before it was settled.

It's not correct, imo, to blame one side or the other. Neither has the consumer's interests in mind. They both are simply trying to leverage for the best terms they can get, and they use the consumer in their battle of wills. Contrary to popular belief, cable companies don't like raising rates, but simple economics forces them to when the providers of content raise their own rates. You can't continually sell something for $1 if it costs you $1.25. That's true for both the re-broadcasters (cable/satellite) and the content providers themselves, e.g. Viacom, Disney, etc.

What's incredibly irritating is that they let it come down to the point where we have these "channels are gonna go dark" battles splashed across the airwaves. What they're doing is getting the consumer to artificially increase demand momentarily and "call in" which the cable companies then use for their own ends to justify their next rate hike. This scheme was worked out in vague (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) terms at the negotiating table before it ever went public. Bet on it.

17. How is that, btw?

U-verse was just coming online as I got out of the industry. I saw a lot of what went into putting it together from the perspective of the cable industry, and all I could tell about it was that it was the first technology that'd come out that had the higher-ups scared shitless.

IOW, it was supposed to be pretty damn impressive.

But, I've never seen it in action. The market is still rather small.

12. I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more press.
I just woke up, turned on VH1, and see this banner saying that I will lose this, and a bunch of other channels I watch tonight.

WHAT?

I hadn't heard a thing about this until today. What is this about? You can damn sure bet if those channels stay off the air long, we will be looking to switch providers ASAP.

I can't stand Time Warner.

I don't even have standard cable, but I'm on Time Warner, which means I wouldn't be able to get MTV back if they came to their senses and started playing music videos again, not that today's music is worth watching much.

Still, it's a fucking quarter...fucking $0.25!!! Gimme a fucking break, TWC!

15. Always had great service from Time Warner in my area...
bought out the dipshit local cable company we had around 15 years ago and it's been like night and day in the quality of programming and service ever since. Missing Viacom for a few days or weeks won't bother me that much.

19. my cable company did the same with our local nbc station
however at the very last moment, they came to an agreement. they want people to write to the companies and complain about how unfair they are to the cable company.

21. looking into alternatives
More than a little curious about hulu and joost.
understand some of the cable networks have live internet streaming--at least according to clark howard.....
Family really not happy about watching tv on a computer screen.

if and it is an if i am working on.....
i can manage to get the video signal from the computer to my old analog tv
then maybe i can avoid some of the headaches presented by this time warner cluster fuck.
I talked to one of our video experts where i work. Might be fairly simple.

Few things would make me as happy as saying good bye to time warner.
