If you could simplify your life, how would you do so?
If I could simplify my life, I would:

- ignore that part of me that wants a career; instead I'd have children and care for them

- garden (the floral kind)

- enjoy online gaming and weekly D&D meetings

- find some part-time job so I can make a little extra money and get rid of my student loans

- eat at restaurants only twice a week and see a movie only twice a month

- try fiction writing again, but I wouldn't put so much pressure on myself

What would you do?

1. Get rid of my apartment and all the crap in it.
Get rid of my car, settle all my debts, and then go around the world meeting people who want to meet me. I'd draw portraits of people to earn my crust.

5. That would mean no doctorate for me - only kids.
Otherwise it would (will!) be a doctorate AND children.

31. Advice:
Don't get a doctorate while your kids are under 14.

You'll miss out on them, and they'll miss out on you.

37. Thanks... I really appreciate that.
I'm in my first year and haven't yet had my first child. If I have a child, I'll at least be almost done with my degree.

4. I try to keep my life simple.
I have a hard time getting myself to go through all the crap in the garage to throw most of it out.

6. Unload the house, unfortunately
I love our old house, but it needs SOOOOO much renovation. We're doing it ourselves (Mr. MG insists we don't need to hire anyone), but we never have time, so everything's half finished.

An alternate plan would involve injecting my husband with large amounts of elephant tranquilizer and then having him transported to a third-world country with instructions for him to find his own way back, preferably working his way across the ocean on a very slow ship, so I could hire a contractor and get the work done once and for all without his butting in! But then again, that doesn't sound very simple.

I loved that, but it's really hard here in the Twin Cities, especially when all my relatives live in the burbs.

38. Weirdly, though, living without a car has complications.
I know that my carless existence permits me to avoid things like registration, taxes, insurance, parking fees, maintenance expenses, and of course the maddening, wretched stress of commuting in the DC area, but like anything else, it's a trade-off and I have spent more time standing at bus stops and on Metro platforms than I'd care to reveal to you. And it also means attending special events, like concerts and the opera, are complicated -- not that I have any money for either at the moment.

41. It was easy in Portland, because almost all the performing arts venues
were within a couple of blocks of one another, and every last one of them was on a frequently-running bus line.

I spent a lot of time at bus and light rail stops, too, but really no more time than I do now cruising for a parking spot (as I did just a couple of hours ago trying to get within striking distance of the restaurant where I was supposed to join some people for brunch.)

10. I'm trying to get rid of stuff.
Stuff is what seems to bog me down.

Actually, I'm pretty diligent about donating things we're not using, but it's a non-stop battle. I just finished cleaning out a hall closet, and that makes me feel good.

11. I would blow up my TV, and computer
Edited on Sat Jan-03-09 06:05 PM by Tuesday Afternoon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P3FW-YBRwg

She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol
And I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal
Well she pressed her chest against me
About the time the juke box broke
Yeah, she gave me a peck on the back of the neck
And these are the words she spoke

Blow up your TV throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try an find Jesus on your own

Well, I sat there at the table and I acted real naive
For I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve
Well, she danced around the bar room and she did the hoochy-coo
Yeah she sang her song all night long, tellin' me what to do

Blow up your TV throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try an find Jesus on your own

Well, I was young and hungry and about to leave that place
When just as I was leavin', well she looked me in the face
I said "You must know the answer."
"She said, "No but I'll give it a try."
And to this very day we've been livin' our way
And here is the reason why

We blew up our TV threw away our paper
Went to the country, built us a home
Had a lot of children, fed 'em on peaches
They all found Jesus on their own

I mean who has the time to select, purchase, put on pants these days? And god forbid if you are already wearing a pair of shoes when you need to take them off or put them on. What a chore.
There's got to be a better way!

As my friend says, "being pantsed is 1/2 the battle". My way around it has been to own multiple pairs of identical pants. I've gone with Levi's 501s, but you could choose something else.

25. Commit capital murder of a federal employee.
Once arrested and convicted, life would be extremely simple. 23 hours a day in a tiny cell with nothing to do but stare at a bare wall.

Kind of how I envision Dubya's concience lives inside that rotting melon he calls a brain.

29. Stop giving a shit.
It seems like most of my complication comes from my actually trying to make things better instead of doing the smart thing and just going with the flow like most people do. My life would be much simpler if I didn't care about anything more important than getting a flat screen and a nicer car.

32. Dump the clutter.
We have too much useless stuff that we've put away "just in case." It drives me crazy. I badly want it gone, but we always argue about which stuff should be tossed and which should be kept, so for the sake of domestic harmony, we rarely talk about it.

Still, I would be much happier with less Stuff.
