Poll question: Who else thinks the head of the 'wow' smilie should be on the same baseline as the preceding text
and its jaw should drop below the baseline?

8. See?
Until the jaws drop, it looks like "just" has mouse ears. Then it looks like it's sitting between two Doric columns or lampposts or somethin'.

I can't decide what color they are, though. Too dark and blue for mauve, not quite periwinkle or cornflower...

16. I think you could reasonably go with "cornflower."

But if it really bothers you, you could always adjust the color on your monitor until you are satisfied that it actually is "cornflower." Because really, one's reality conforms to one's perceptions, no?

6. Can't easily be done, I'm afraid.
That's how the browser wants to draw it, and it's probably in the HTML spec that it should work that way.

13. If you put an image in line with a piece of text
like this:

<p>here is some text with <img src="whatever" /> an image in it</p>

it will always draw the image with its baseline aligned with the baseline of the text.

14. Yeah, that would probably require some fancy CSS formatting if it's doable at all.

17. Totally.

But then wouldn't that mess up the leading for the following line of type?

21. Yes, but
in my study of Smilie Placement, I've found that the "wow" smilie is one that's usually the last thing in a post, or at least in a paragraph. Ergo, the additional leading forced by the jaw descender would likely not be unwanted or unattractive.

24. I wouldn't have a problem with it when it was the last item in a post or paragraph,

..but I think you would have to add some special code disallowing it anywhere within a body of text. Because messing up the leading for the rest of the wordage would be distracting and pretty much unholy.
