Who is your favorite Victorian novelist?
Edited on Mon Jan-05-09 07:04 PM by cryingshame
Provided you've read more than one or two.

Mine would be Anna Karenina, although Tolstoy is considered the bridge to modern literature he put Victorian life and its hypocrisies in a seamlessly written and timeless vehicle.

I like that he exposes the double standard between what is acceptable for men and women.

Last night, PBS had Tess of the d'Urbervilles on. Such a sad story that also points to the double standards between men/women.

For pure joy in reading brilliant writing there is Oscar Wilde and the Picture of Dorian Gray.

Does anyone read this stuff anymore?

3. Wilkie Collins
I love "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone" -- highly entertaining Victorian page-turners.

11. I was going to say, at least Dickens usually gives us a happy ending. But Bleak House
is aptly titled.
