Doing the Math to Find the Good Jobs
Mathematicians Land Top Spot in New Ranking
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123119236117055127.html
This here though says it all:
"According to the study, mathematicians fared best in part because they typically work in favorable conditions -- indoors and in places free of toxic fumes or noise -- unlike those toward the bottom of the list like sewage-plant operator, painter and bricklayer. They also aren't expected to do any heavy lifting, crawling or crouching -- attributes associated with occupations such as firefighter, auto mechanic and plumber."

Now I know why you went this route...No heavy lifting!

BTW, Biologist is #4--:woohoo:

1. I really love that philosopher was #12.
Really...run a job search sometime for philosopher. Short of being a philosophy professor, there is really no such position.

7. Many moons ago
I dated a woman who worked behind the scenes at a local TV station... she said that no matter how wrong the weather guy was, people would still go up to him & ask him about the weather the next day. sounded like a pretty secure job...

The word is derived from the Greek. It literally means, "male porn star who thinks a lot about numbers and stuff."

9. "Mathematician" seems like more than a general category than a specific job though
The woman in the example sounded like a software engineer or programmer to me (both of which were high on the list) and the #2 spot of actuary requires advanced mathematical training (typically a graduate degree, and a whole bunch of industry-specific training), and involves almost nothing but math. Ditto for statistician.

I'll have to send this to my brother, who is about to graduate with a math PHD.

11. It's not based on opinion..
Its based on salary, how much hazard you are exposed to physical difficulty ect..See that biologist is in top 4 but NURSE is considered one of the worst.

they are working with people that have been in prison, dont like them one bit, and are very likely to re-offend.

As for the rest, lets just say I "used to" have a speeding habit that ran me afoul of the local law enforcement...

I work with parole officers all the time. The vast majority of their time is spent visiting recently released pot smokers. :P

21. I've never really consider it before now...
but how does one become a PO? I'm smart, I'm not someone people mess with and I'm fairly easygoing. As long as I can live in a metropolis and thus not have to drive, I'd be thrilled to have the steady check.

at the place I worked. They needed part-time jobs because they were not paid well. Additionally all the people they have contact with are assholes, dangerous, and hate POs.

Think philosopher is tough,
imagine when your proof proves 1 + 2 = (3 and 5 and 7)
by using 37 * 3 = 111 * 7 = 777.

See what I mean.

Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 05:00 PM by Chan790
because I'm not a mathematician. In fact my math skills stink. Well...my trig and geometry skills are okay. Pre-calculus ended any dreams I had of being anything other than a starving writer though.

Does anybody actually know calculus? Or is it like War and Peace...people just buy the book and put it on the bookshelf so other people will assume they read it and are smart?

Clearly they're never mapped vernal pools or done murrelet surveys for $12 an hour. :eyes:

nothing. The world is always going to need plumbers as long as there are toilets and the money is great. I know...I had to find one to fix a ruptured line (the one coming from the well into the house that has no shutoff.) at 9:45PM on Dec. 31st.

I almost wish that I'd considered it as a career option.
