Kris Kristofferson comes over the phone in a raspy voice that is at once fully seasoned and eternally youthful. The singer, songwriter, actor and activist is the first to admit, with more than a little awe and wonder, that his has been an extraordinary life.
"My friends are guys who used to be my heroes," he says. "And they're still my heroes, but they got to be close friends. Guys like Muhammad Ali, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash."
His easy laugh and exuberance for artistic and political talk serve as a reminder that Kristofferson, 67, has not lost the passion that first drove him into music in the 1960s.
That passion is in evidence on Kristofferson's new CD, "Broken Freedom Song: Live From San Francisco" (Oh Boy Records). Recorded live at the Gershwin Theatre at San Francisco State University, the CD captures the singer-songwriter performing his songs in low-key acoustic arrangements.
