1. I did
then on the 5th I was laid off, along with 5 others. Found out today that there will be at least 5-6 more, but of course they haven't been told yet.

I'll download it with the hopes that the year will end better than it's begun.

:hi:

4. No, because debt has its place
Edited on Thu Jan-08-09 09:07 PM by CreekDog
to get out of debt i would have to pay off my mortgage --i can't, at least not without moving.

i would also have to pay off my car, but there's little point in doing that, the interest per month is trivial ($15) and the peace of mind in having a couple more months of living expenses in the bank is worth more to me than free and clear title.

secured debt has a useful place.

unsecured debt, however, that's the one to watch out for.

7. The mortgage is the last thing I'm going to pay down
I want to pay off my stoopid credit cards so I can free up the money to throw at the mortgage. :)

23. it may be a better idea to throw money at your 401k or other investments first
depending upon what your mortgage and tax rates are.

in my case, over the long term thanks to taxes and a low mortgage interest rate, my conservatively invested 401k was a better long term place for extra money than my mortgage. i generally pay the minimum on my mortgage.

6. Fine, just fine!
How are you doing? Have you found a job yet? :) I'm resolving to pay off at least 2 debts that I have this year. :) BTW, if you can, do her "Save Yourself" Plan & get $100 at next year. She offered that deal last year (open up a TD America savings account & deposit at least $50/month automatically; get $100 one year later) & I've got one more payment to go!

8. Therre's no "resolution" about it.
It's simply something I have to do. For me, it's paying off massive vet bills on my cat. But I love him anyway :loveya:

14. The biggest amount was incurred at one of those specialized clinics
so I'm guessing I'm "spreading the wealth" ;)

Too bad "single payer" doesn't include our furball loved-ones, too...

9. Thanks for the link! I've just gotten my unsecured debt consolidated
by a non-profit agency. I have a budget & a cash-only spending plan. I won't be out of debt this year, but will be well on my way.

18. Well, I have no choice but to get out of debt.
I am in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy for the next 4 years. I pay the court about $600 a month through an automatic withdrawal from my paycheck. I am not allowed to have any credit until the bankruptcy is discharged. Fortunately, I am also drawing Social Security, so I am not hurting for money. I would like to retire, but will have to keep working until the bankruptcy is paid off. That is, if the company I work for doesn't go belly up. Three people were laid off last week. My department consisted of me and 2 others. The other two were laid off, and I am doing their work also. So, I have job security for a while.

bills and rent.

Damn good thing, too, as MrSG got laid off 3 weeks ago.

Think I'll check the link out anway, though.

30. Had everything paid off except for $33,000 left on my
mortgage. Now with a divorce and $12,000 in medical bills this year I had to borrow money against my once-paid-for car. I may have another $10,000 in medical bills this year, since the collar bone I broke last March has still not healed.

32. Got out, got a little back in, Oprah's a shill and Suze is just shrill.
Indeed, I recall the tv episode where the caller could get a good deal (40% off) on a spa, had some debt (albeit not much), and Suze said to go and do it.

Other people say it better: If you can't budget for it, you can't afford it.

I'll be out of mine in a couple of months, then saving again, and not being so erratic in spending.
