Jesus Tebow and Football.
Congratulations to FL and their national championship.

Dear Tim Tebow,

"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
-- Proverbs 16: 18-19 (KJV)"

ooh waaah wahh wah.. he did the gater mouth clap. oh how horrible! :eyes:

he did that because oklahoma has been blabbing for the past couple of weeks about how florida was overrated, tebow was overrated(what was that statement? "4th best quarterback" in their division), and how they'd kick florida's ass... and let's not forget that he wasn't the only one talking, he was "exchanging words" with the guy.

in a sport where people tackle and basically beat the hell out of each other for a ball, "unsportsmanlike" penalities are usually just hilarious.

yup, god forbid tebow show some human nature by acting excited to win the national championship and beat the team that had been talking him and his team down all week.

i'm not a big tebow fan due the media drooling over him, and i hate florida since i'm a bama fan.. but i don't think he's full of himself or an asshole. tebow is not the one talking the smack about tebow.. the media is.

7. That is why all glory goes to God
To believe that a simple man can overcome the difficulties of life without the grace of God, is to not understand the beautiful gift of Grace.

Yet my statement is arrogant, it in some way wishes to claim the overcoming of pride, yet such a claim would devalue the grace of God.

So what can be said, but thank God for his mercy and love.

I'm trying to wean myself off sports, it's too time consuming. I don't watch football anymore, I gave that up. I got tired of the interviews after the games, because the winning players always give credit to God, and the losers blame themselves. You know, just once I'd like to hear a player say, 'Yeah, we were in the game, until Jesus made me fumble! He hates our team.'

Alot of people give glory to God, with love and thanks when they are failing or losing also. Sounds funny, but its true.

I think it goes sorta like this usually, at least for me.

Yea we were in the game, until that fumble happened, Guess winning wasn't what was in store for me today, maybe someone on other team really needed that win today, and I'm glad nobody got hurt, thanks. And by the way, thanks for the skills you have given me, even if they didn't work out so good today.

63. no you do not go around doing that
Instead you go around and get mad at others for talking about their beliefs. Isn't what you do the same thing?

If you think his beliefs are silly, chuckle, or smile. If it is just, in your view, wrong or not smart, then why does it get you mad? When people on Jackass do stupid things, it doesn't get people mad. When people talk about alien abduction it doesn't get people mad, when people talk about Star Trek, it doesn't get people mad, but when someone just says what is part of his belief and its about Jesus, people act differently.

I think there is something spiritual to this effect, thats my belief on it.

People can talk about what they like, without telling you what you have to believe, or thinking you are worse.

I know alot of Christians do try and tell people what they have to believe, but alot of them just like talking about what makes them feel good. Most of them do not think secular people are worse. And most don't think they are better.

65. This might be a perspective thing
I guess what makes me wonder, is why does it bother others if he thinks having a good day is a gift from God.

If you think he is wrong, why does it matter to you. Do you feel the same way when a person says thanks to a old coach, or a teacher, or a parent. Remember for that person, that is what he interprets God is to them. Maybe for him God helped him calm down, or gave him help when he was in training, or in strife, even if others might think it is a trick of his own mind, he thinks it is something more. He thinks it was something God helped him with.

71. You misunderstand me
It doesn't bother me so much as I find it hysterical that he believes an invisible man in the sky helps him win. Quite a bit different from an old coach or a teacher. They have the advantage of being part of the natural world and they aren't condemning anyone to eternal torment for not believing in them.

72. I get what you are saying
Edited on Sat Jan-10-09 06:08 AM by RandomThoughts
And I understand the idea of you finding it humorous. We all have different experiences in life, and from those experiences we form what we believe to be reality. Someone with an entirely different set of experiences sometimes seems very odd. And there are some people that are just odd, I laugh at somethings also, including some I do :)

But on your last point about people being condemned to eternal torment. I see this different, but I know alot of fire and brimstone teachings emphasizes this.

I do not believe Christians are better then others, I don't even think they prove themselves more moral or more good. But its about the direction you are going, not where you are.

(Don't read next part, if my beliefs don't interest you, they are just my beliefs and I find the subject interesting)

My belief, is that God does not condemn people to damnation, he offers the way out. In the idea that he is Love, goodness and kindness, people who end up being damned do so because they reject the spirit of Goodness he offers. This does not mean secular people are not kind, it only means that, as most secular people also know, the ways of good bring us back from difficulty, and for many people they believe those inspirations come from God.

There is some point of spirals, where many people find they have to either spiral down, leaving kindness, or spiral up embracing it. Many people find the teachings, and the spirit of God, helps guide them on that upward spiral. I know alot of other people find other ways to be in goodness, but each religion seems to have their own belief on how that can be maintained. Christians believe that it is through Jesus Christ.

I am not telling you this to convert, or convince you, just to say that in most peoples beliefs it is different. I believe God would save everyone if they allow it, but with free will, they have to choose to want to be kept from the place of eternal suffering. So he does not condemn the world, he saves it.

I hope you see this as more then semantics, it goes to a big part of my belief in how God does work in the world(in my view). If he did not give us free will, we would not exist. So he loves us so much, he allows us to have free will, even if those choices sometimes cause ourselves or others harm(when we are not at our best). But he helps us learn to be better, to be more kind, less angry, and lots of other things.

And I don't see the guy's interview, or know what he said, but if the only gripe is him putting what he beliefs on his eye ink, I think others project that he is also telling others what they must believe.

See what I mean, is he saying what he believes, or is he telling you what you have to believe. I think the second part is people projecting onto what he is saying.

If I say I love Jesus.

Am I telling you what to do? Am I telling you what you have to believe?

Michigan (briefly) had a kicker who wore an armband that said Jesus. My sister, among others, emailed the athletic director, and the next week it was gone - they told him it wasn't part of the uniform.

I STRONGLY object to affirming religion on the field. I detest it.

I don't think anyone can sue him, but his coach should have had the good sense to stop him. Except as far as I can tell, Tim Tebow does whatever Tim Tebow wants and has his whole life. And Urban Meyer isn't exactly a harbinger of good taste himself.

really when it comes down to it, someone will find something to be offended or upset about even if there is nothing there. tebow is a talented guy - not the god the media makes him out to be, but extremely talented and because of that someone will find something wrong with him no matter what.

74. Freedom to worship as one chooses, yes
Freedom to take advantage of a national stage to proseletyze or advertise one's beliefs? Not so sure about that one. There is a clear separation of church and state in this country and publicly advertising one's beliefs at a taxpayer-supported, University-sponsored event, on national TV, in my opinion, crosses the line. He was grandstanding.
.
Tim Tebow is a talented athlete, absolutely. That doesn't mean he can do no wrong or can't be a jerk. I've noticed that these religious fundamentalists seem to derive greater pleasure from proclaiming their beliefs than by quiet good deeds. Not all, but many.

I wonder what would have happened if his eye patches said Obama or McCain or Bush? Hmmm...

part of freedom of speech and religion is that sometimes you'll be offended.. hell, someone will always find something to be offended about. personally i don't think that tebow's eye decoration of choice is a violation of seperation of church and state, but rather freedom of expression and religion in practice.

i'm far from a fan of florida, and not a fan of tebow because i can't stand listening to sportscasters express their undying love for him... but i think that to act like he's an asshole because he has a bible verse referenced on his face paint is just silly and absurd.

16. There's a fine line between humbly giving your god credit for your achievements
and pridefully declaring that your god loves you so much more than anyone else that he will kick the asses of anyone who dares mess with you. Or worse, when they use their moment in the spotlight to preach. It's the difference between Jimmy Carter sacrificing himself to help the needy because his religion tells him to, and Pat Robertson telling everyone they should vote and hate as he does because only he understands God.

Having avoided all the pre- and post-game nonsense, I have no idea which side of the line Tebow falls on.

They call themselves God's Chosen People or talk about how God blesses their nation or their religion or their race or whatever over other nations or religions or races or whatever. Only their religion will get you to heaven, God will insure that their nation wins a war over other nations, God says that only they are allowed to marry, or only they are morally just.

Sure, they may say "God loves everyone equally" but they really mean "God loves me more."

Of course a lot of people, like Jimmy Carter, MLK, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Mother Teresa, and many unsung beautiful people also use religion to remain humble, to explain why they are self-sacrificing and devoted to helping others. I couldn't say which side outnumbers the other. But a sizable portion of believers of every faith (and a disturbing number of atheists, too) believe that their belief makes them superior to others of different beliefs. Expecting God to reward you over others is an absolute sign that you believe God loves you more.

68. I agree with you on alot of that

Yea that belief of superiority is the bane of humanity. It allows people to break empathy, and do bad things. It is almost as if feelings of superiority are the only rational for lack of equality in anything. You can't have more or better of anything then your neighbor, unless you can rationalize why you deserve it. And superiority is one of the big ways to do this.

Many people of many religions, forget they are as flawed as other people. Somehow when people start thinking they are better then others, bad things start to happen.

This is not just a religious thing. It is what happens when people form groups. Most people would hurt 10 people to stop 1 in their group from being hurt. The idea that a person in their group is worth more then another group is part of the entire problem of humanity, or more the lack of it.

(true for many people but not all)
Americans think 1 american life is worth more then 10 Iraq lives.
Iranian's think 1 Iranian life is worth more then 10 Jewish lives.
Jewish people believe 1 Jewish life is more important then 10 Gaza lives.
and 100 other examples.

And all of this unequal value of the value of life between groups makes all retaliation escalate upward. 10 for 1, 100 for 10, 1000 for 100.

This could also be figured based on allowing others to suffer without hope, or happiness. Many would allow 10 'others' to suffer, to keep 1 of their own from suffering. And groups of 1 person are even worse.

Maybe you have to just think all life is sacred, and none can be given a value, because every time we start doing the math, we factor our own group as meaning more, (while the other groups do the same math with inverted results.). So only way I can figure it is to try and never hurt other life at any cost, since once you assign value you fall into the trap of unequal empathy.

It seems people in the world are real good at loving their neighbor.
The guy across the street? not so much.

And some people (including based on religion), do this way to much.

Thanks for such a great thread, really good responses and thoughtful comments, really gets a person thinking.

69. Talk about sideways memory association
(Off topic.)

Took a jolt when you mentioned Vera Lee.

pink floyd the wall

Vera (Waters) 1:38

Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn?
Remember how she said that
We would meet again
Some sunny day?
Vera! Vera!
What has become of you?
Does anybody else here
Feel the way I do?

Much better song.

62. It's not always John 3:16
Sometimes it's Philippians 4:13...

I would have thought that given the nature of the game that Deuteronomy 23:1 might have been appropriate. Or Matthew 6:5-6, which would be great irony.

70. I have heard this Matthew 6:5-6 comment before
It may not be the same as what he is doing.

He is not praying, and he may not be claiming some righteousness or Holiness. If he is doing it because he thinks doing it makes him better in eyes of others, or for some self satisfaction, then it might apply.

I really don't know, never heard the guy speak.

But sometimes its fun to talk about what you believe in. And giving glory to God, is not necessarily the same thing as praying. It depends on intent.

And people wear corporate logos, they wear names of celebrities they might like, they wear items to make themselves look like a part of some social class.

What is wrong, if it is not done for some self glory, with saying that you love Jesus. Its fun to say, it feels good, its not telling others what they have to believe.

And if you pray in private, so that you can be seen by others as being a better Christian, (because you do not pray in public), so people know you pray in private, and you get other people to look up to you, then you are praying in private for the wrong reason also.

Its all depends on intent, and we all project our own thoughts to find others intent, so both sides of this discussion is quite funny.

he's clearly not very smart if he buys into that crap. Yeah, sure some guy was born by a virgin, led a "sin" free life, cured leppers, restored sight to blind people, rose the dead, created fish out of thin air, died and came back to life 3 days later. This shit is fucking idiotic!
