Tetris is like a cognitive vaccine fighting the effects of PTSD
I shit you not. This is based on a PTSD treatment study at Oxford. Fucking Oxford, man!

If you are mugged, or shot by a neighborhood sniper, or get in a horrendous car accident, or get chased down the street by a pack of snarling rabid pumas, and fear that later these events will haunt your psyche and keep you awake at night--and maybe even leave you permanently emotionally scarred--the smartest thing you do (once you're back home safe and your wounds have been treated by a medical professional) is to immediately hop on your PC or Mac and begin obsessively playing Tetris for hours on end. Hours. On. End.

It's like psychotherapy in keyboard!

<== and these nightmares will replace your old ones!

4. My managed to do the same with metal detecting
I had developed panic attacks while going through a very nasty divorce and found that metal detecting (which I love to do), gave me the benefits I used to find only with meditation.

It puzzled me as to why I would be so relaxed afterwards...and I can assure you it was not because of being tired.
My theory is that if you have something on which you can focus completely while using as many senses as possible; the benefits are much like meditation.

In the meantime, I have never played Tetris (gasp!), but now I have to check it out.

I would love to hear from anyone else with a hobby that does the same thing. (keep it clean!)

5. Tetris is also a sedative.
I keep my Game Boy at the bedside and no matter how wound up I am, one game of Sticky (often less than that) and I'm comatose as soon as I snap it shut. It's like a mental bong hit, man.

7. Does Runescape count too?
I've been much happier since I started playing Runescape. Then again, in that game, I can be a millionaire and people respect my smithing and agility levels.
