2. Hey, we need more Dems in SC too. And look at my beautiful Charleston -

glorious colonial homes, the beaches, the market, king street

pictures don't do it justice

beautiful, liberal-leaning city

7. I was at the Ashley Marina for almost two weeks in '87.
Charleston was beautiful then! I know it still is.
I also visited Brookgreen Gardens several times in the winter of '03. Loved it!

3. What's wrong with Nashville, Joan?....
...you have friends here...:hi:

Besides, it may be a red state, but we're a strong sea of blue in that red state, and all tax dollars flow to us...;-)

I've gotten used to living in an area filled with wildlife. I need the country. Tennessee is beautiful. I've been thinking about living there since my visit with MissHoneychurch.

We are heading south. I don't know exactly where but I need roads without snow on 'em if I'm going to earn a living.

4. Joani!! Long time no see!
Head South. We need new progressive blood down here!
Ever considered northern Shelby County, AL? Near Birmingham
but semi-rural. With enough down payment, ya can score a property
that a year ago sold for $300K for less than $90K now.

Just sayin'. Damn good to see ya!

I'll be dropping by from time to time.

I'm trying to stay away from my computer late at night because I really do need the sleep. My daytimes are filled with keeping mr. j_a company since he lost his job back in September.
I miss D U!

5. I'm biased. I say... come to NC!
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 09:18 AM by mwooldri
NC to me is a very balanced, rounded state, beautiful yet metropolitan in parts too.

You want urban and suburban? Charlotte, Raleigh are for you. Want liberal and educated? Chapel Hill and Asheville. Mountains? Plenty of them... Beaches? Definitely. Swamp? Sure!

You can get a good house in the Greensboro area starting around $100k... "new" townhomes are advertised in the $125k starting range but considering todays market you could probably chunk some money off from that. $200k will get you a VERY nice house.

Oh and that Jeep would look great on the Outer Banks... the beach that is. But not in turtle season.

If I can help in any way - I'm in the Greensboro area - then you know what to do.

Sorry to hear about the financial wipeout though.

Mark.

13. The Outer Banks are awesome !!!
I remember Albermarle Sound when it was inhabited only by shorebirds as I brought a boat up the inland waterway back in '87.

This move south will be in the low budget range until I start making a few bucks http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=8190700
I didn't know our money would be lost to Bernard Madoff when I decided that it was time for a new job. I'm ready to roll now. It took a bit of doing to find ways to attach signs to the jeep's plastic bumpers.

22. OK, low budget...
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 11:34 PM by mwooldri
Then the Outer Banks will probably remain a nice vacation spot. Plus since you're working in the trucking industry then you'll need Interstate access. That rules out Ocracoke :(

With that in mind you'll need to find somewhere along the I-40, I-85, I-77, I-26, I-95 corridors. That's an awful lot of NC to choose from! For value for money, you can't go wrong with a little outside city limits of one of the bigger places. You avoid city tax but be close enough to city services to use them anyway. We live in rural Guilford county and housing can be affordable here.

Though I just googling around house prices in "upstate NY" and they're quite reasonable too... actually comparable to here. Nothing like NYC house prices or some parts of CA.

Mark.

14. money is exactly why I am moving south
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 10:53 PM by Joan_Alpern
Over the past 6 years I've been looking at different neighborhoods as I traveled. I'm a Southerner by birth. It's time for all this snow to become a memory instead of a reality.

Asheville is beautiful. It's also a lot like Woodstock ... just a few miles down the road from me. I'll miss the Catskills in the summer but I'm done with trying to stay warm.

16. I think that might be the best spot for mr. j_a.
He's going to miss his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters a whole lot. x( I truly hate to make him move but I need to get away from the cold if I'm going to be able to support the two of us. His daughter promised to visit and Jon can take a train north anytime he is feeling homesick for family.

17. Come on down to NC.
We moved here about nine years ago and we love it. We are four hours from the coast and about five from the mountains. The people down here are great and the best part about the state is it is finally blue.

24. North.
"South Carolina is too small to be a republic, and too large to be an insane asylum." This from a South Carolinian, no less.

Okay, Charleston might be worth taking a look at; it's kind of like New Orleans Jr., except it isn't really Jr. (It even has a "French Quarter"!) But other than that, stick to NC (now officially Blue!) with progressive bastions like the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill "Triangle" area (the Raleigh suburb Cary is said to stand for "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees" :-) ), Asheville, etc.

30. Compromise: move to Charlotte and get both
They even have Ethiopian restaurants and Trader Joe's (a block or so apart at that) now.

Speaking as a South Carolinian born and bred, we're kind of a drag. Though Rock Hill is the cheap(er) place to live if you want Charlotte amenities but not prices. Here in Columbia, there's incredible quantities of new housing going up. Considering that a) we have no industry and b) there's supposed to be a depression coming on, there is a very good chance of a housing glut and very low prices right around the corner. Columbia is sort of Austin without the music or charm; then again, though we're ruled by backwoodsy cretins at least we're not owned by the oil companies.:)
